Biochemistry BSc (Hons)

3 years, starting in September 2020

Gain a fundamental understanding of life processes at a molecular level. You’ll be prepared for a career examining the molecular basis of life.

Biochemistry involves solving biological problems through an understanding of the molecular basis of life. You will develop your knowledge, techniques and understanding at a fundamental level, preparing you for a wide range of academic, industrial and medically related careers.

In the first year, you’ll study a broad introduction to biosciences. This will give you a foundation from which you will have the option to specialise in specific areas, such as neuroscience, cellular molecular biology, genomics and biotechnology. You will also gain hands-on experience of practical scientific techniques in dedicated undergraduate laboratories, as well as access to specialist technology in research labs.

In the final year, you’ll undertake a research project, giving you first-hand experience as a researcher and the opportunity to contribute to some of the world-leading research in the Department.

You will graduate with a solid foundation for further study or graduate roles where a broader knowledge of molecular biosciences is needed. The academic and key skills you'll develop mean you will also be prepared for a wide range of alternative careers.

If you want a more in-depth study experience, you could consider applying for our MBiochem (Hons) Biochemistry course.

Teaching

Specialist teaching is influenced by the expertise of academics in the Department and includes areas such as cell biology, biodiversity and ecology, evolutionary biology, genomics, plant science, microbiology and immunology, neuroscience, developmental biology and stem cells, structural molecular biology, cancer genetics and biotechnology.

We also have world-leading research centres, covering evolution, regenerative medicine, networks and collective behaviour and mathematical biology.

Facilities

Practical classes take place in our well-equipped teaching laboratories. You will also have access to specialist technology in a dedicated computer laboratory for bioinformatics.

Take a look around our biochemistry lab.

Careers

You'll develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in a variety of fields, such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, education, environment, or roles in agricultural, medical and chemical laboratories. Many of our graduates also choose to go on to postgraduate study in preparation for academic or industry-based research careers.

Studying a biosciences degree requires you to apply a broad skill set to the understanding of complex processes. This skill set is also useful in a range of other careers, such as business, management and science teaching.

Course structure

This course lasts 3 years. It starts in September 2020 and ends in 2023. Induction week starts on 21 September 2020.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You'll be able to choose from a number of optional units in years 2 and 3. Here are some examples of the optional units currently being studied by our students.

Entry requirements

Your application, especially your personal statement, should demonstrate your enthusiasm for studying biochemistry. This might include relevant reading, voluntary or work experience, areas of interest from your current studies or other relevant extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. You will need a strong performance in both Biology and Chemistry as part of your entry qualifications.

We are aware that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We take this into careful consideration through our contextual admissions process.

Application information

Selection process

We will usually assess you based on your UCAS application. If you are studying certain qualifications, such as a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, you may be invited to attend an interview as part of our selection process so we can better assess your studies and experiences. If you are studying a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, please make sure that your UCAS application is submitted by 15 January: if you apply after this deadline, then it may be too late for us to include you in our interview process.

Very exceptionally we may invite you to an interview if you have circumstances we cannot assess from an application alone.

Our interview page gives more information on what you should expect from an interview.
