Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering MEng (Hons)

4 years, starting in September 2024

Learn the core knowledge and technical skills of chemical engineering and focus on the environmental challenges of new technologies, processes and products.

The first three years of our course develop your understanding of the core practices of chemical engineering. Through problem-based learning, you'll critically apply mathematical, scientific and engineering knowledge to projects. A mix of practical work in laboratories and theory in lectures and seminars gives you the breadth of learning needed to become adept in the subject.

You’ll also develop transferable skills such as problem solving, teamwork and resource management. Integrating these with your technical knowledge, you’ll learn how to tackle complex, and often open-ended, engineering problems. The Individual and group projects you carry out through the degree are a chance for you to develop scientific ideas from bench scale to process scale.

In your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to build on your chemical engineering knowledge by specialising in environmental engineering. Choosing this route allows you to explore aspects that address social, environmental and health issues, as well as sustainability. Focusing on environmental science and engineering, you'll study the economic, legislative and ethical issues that control environmental protection and sustainability. Areas you'll cover will include clean technologies such as water treatment and waste management.

You can switch between this and our MEng Chemical Engineering course up until the end of your third year. This is so you can use your study experience so far to help you decide on your final degree.

Teaching

Our department’s great staff and student community provides a friendly and supportive environment to learn in. We deliver teaching complemented by guest lectures from practitioners to give you a professional and practical perspective on the subject. You’ll learn from expert academic staff whose industrial collaborations, research and entrepreneurial activities feed into our teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Facilities

Specialist facilities are central to your study experience. Our laboratory facilities range from bench scale to pilot scale and are specially equipped to enhance your education in becoming a chemical engineer. You’ll have access to:

  • teaching labs with continuous reactors, microbial bioreactors and a range of other bespoke equipment that demonstrates core chemical engineering concepts

Learning and teaching

Contact hours

Our teaching for this course is delivered through in-person learning on campus, supported by high quality online provision.

In your first year, you'll typically have around 15 hours of timetabled sessions a week, made up of lectures, seminars, and laboratory classes. The significant majority of contact hours over the duration of your course will be in person, and this will be enhanced by some online delivery which will constitute a smaller proportion of these contact hours, depending on your programme of study, year of study and chosen optional units. This may be supplemented by additional activities such as a small number of online learning sessions (not live), skills development sessions, and personal tutorials.

In later years, the amount of timetabled sessions on campus may vary based on the options you choose, with a greater emphasis on independent learning. Project and dissertation units will generally have fewer scheduled sessions to allow you time for your independent work. This may also mean the number of hours of timetabled sessions each week will vary within a year.

Overall workload and independent learning

Outside your timetabled contact hours, you're expected to carry out independent learning and assessment activities to support your studies. Typically, you should expect to spend a total of 35 to 40 hours on scheduled sessions and independent study each week. Examples of independent activities may include:

  • individual research
  • reading journal articles and books
  • working on individual and group projects
  • working through problem sheets
  • preparing coursework assignments or presentations
  • revising for exams

Assessment breakdown

As a guide, approximately 60% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course. The final degree classification is determined by your second, third and final year marks and each contributes 20%, 40% and 40% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and apply for membership with the accrediting body. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

Building on your e-portfolio from Year 1, you will reflect on the technical, transferable and leadership skills that you have gained so far. You will develop a personal development plan looking ahead to your (optional) placement year and your career beyond university.

Advanced principles of chemical engineering

15 credits

This unit builds on the previous units Principles of chemical engineering 1 and 2. You will learn how to apply advanced principles of chemical and biochemical engineering to complex systems often in the context of uncertainty. This will allow you to describe complex fluid flows and transport phenomena in multiphase systems, conduct advanced process modelling and solve problems in complex chemical reaction and separation process engineering.

Environmental and engineering project management

15 credits

In this unit, you'll cover core business and environmental aspects of the chemical engineering profession. You'll explore the business environment and legal framework in which chemical engineers work and methods for managing engineering projects and evaluating their profitability. You'll learn to use the tools for evaluating the environmental impact of chemical engineering activities, including environmental awareness, principles of environmental science and key environmental technologies.

Product and process design (group)

15 credits

Starting with market research, you'll investigate the production of a product and design the plant to manufacture it. Taking into account culture and ethics, and using chemical engineering fundamentals, you'll design and develop environmentally, socially and economically viable solutions to complex and open-ended engineering problems. Previous design projects have included carbon capture and utilisation, cultured meat manufacture, and sustainable rocket fuel.

Product and process design (individual)

15 credits

This individual project builds on the product and process design group project. You will design an individual process unit in detail and apply both short-cut and rigorous design methods, and optimisation to produce a sustainable and safe solution.

Advanced core environmental engineering

10 credits

Using the technical and theoretical knowledge you have acquired through the course so far, you will further advance your understanding of environmental processes and engineering.

Clean technologies for environmental engineering

10 credits

You'll study a range of clean technology concepts and applications to reduce the environmental footprint of human society, minimise environmental pollution, increase resource efficiency and recycling, and for climate change mitigation.

Economics and legislation for environmental engineering

10 credits

You will explore and apply traditional and advanced concepts and models of environmental economics, politics and legislation to environmental engineering problems.

MEng research project in environmental engineering

30 credits

You will engage with open-ended research to plan, conduct and complete an experimental, literature-based, or theoretical/computational project aligned to environmental engineering research in the department and using academic research facilities. In the past, students in our department have, for example, carried out projects on the fate of microplastics in the environment, biorefineries, or low carbon energy futures.
