Our course develops your understanding of the sciences and disciplines relating to manufacturing. You’ll study engineering, manufacturing and management to understand their role in production processes.

Your first two years give you a detailed understanding of the subject and follow the same course structure as our other mechanical engineering degrees. This allows you to move between any of our BEng and MEng courses up to the end of your second year.
You’ll have the opportunity to translate ideas into practice through project work. In your final year, you'll work on a semester-long, full-time individual project that encourages you to take imaginative approaches to solve complex engineering problems. You could explore new business or engineering technologies in areas such as aerospace, automotive, sports equipment, medical devices, or data management.
We are invested in helping you get the most out of your learning experience. You’ll learn from academics with expertise in mechanical engineering and established links with industry. They have knowledge in design, manufacture, biomechanics, materials, automotive and aerospace. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into undergraduate teaching and contribute to your learning experience.
You’ll have access to teaching and research laboratories that support a range of practical activities and project work. We design our facilities to be like industrial workspaces so that you gain insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment. You’ll also have access to our research facilities, which are fitted with the latest technology. This is similar to the equipment you could use in industry when you graduate. Our facilities include:

They often hold specialist and managerial roles in high technology industries in engineering and manufacturing or pursue academic and research careers with further study.

We understand that you will want to know more about the shape of the academic year. We work hard and plan for different scenarios, to be able to welcome you to the University of Bath at the start of each semester.
This course lasts 4 years. It starts in September 2023 and ends in 2027. Welcome week starts on 25 September 2023.

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.
As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

A placement lets you experience working in a commercial or industrial environment and learn about the technologies and processes that companies use. It can also be an opportunity to earn a salary during your degree and make industry contacts. Gaining professional experience can improve your career prospects and count towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.
Our students have worked at companies such as Unilever, Rolls Royce Cars and Airbus UK.
Over half of our students choose to undertake a placement but you can decide whether this is right for you up until the end of your second year. Placement opportunities cannot be guaranteed but you will receive tailored support from our specialist team to help you secure a placement.
Find out more about engineering placements and the support we offer.You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.
We provide a flexible learning experience delivered online and in person on campus. You should expect to spend around 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. These hours consist of structured activities and independent learning.
You can expect to spend between 15 and 20 hours a week on structured learning activities, which are made up of in-person and online sessions. Timetabled sessions on campus include a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratories. Online activities might include following a recorded lecture or other learning materials or joining a timetabled live interactive session.
The rest of your time will be spent in independent learning and take up between 15 to 25 hours a week. This includes individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams.
You'll need regular access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and a reliable internet connection. This will allow you to take full advantage of online resources and also prepare you to learn fully online, should it become necessary.
A laptop computer is needed to make the most of your timetabled sessions on campus. Key software for your course will be available to you remotely, including access to MS Teams and Zoom through your university account.
You will be assessed by a range of methods designed to develop and test your skills and knowledge. These include examinations, reports, projects and presentations. The balance of assessment by coursework, exams and practical work will vary throughout your degree, depending on the optional units that you choose.
As a guide, 40-50% of the course will be assessed by coursework and practical work, and 40-60% by examination. In your third year, you’ll complete a group project and in your final year, you’ll complete an individual project or dissertation. You’ll be assessed individually but you may also be assessed as part of a group.

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and become part of a national engineering community. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more academic exams.
As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).
The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.
The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.
We consider a range of factors when assessing your application for this course, including your previous academic performance (such as GCSEs), your personal statement, your predicted grades and the combination of subjects you study at A level (or equivalent).
Your personal statement should explain your motivation for choosing this degree and any relevant non-academic interests and achievements. You are more likely to be successful if you demonstrate a keen interest in Engineering and manufacturing processes through relevant reading, extracurricular or co-curricular activities, or work experience.
You will need a strong performance in both Mathematics and Physics or Engineering as part of your entry qualifications. If you are taking qualifications including a mixture of subjects (such as A levels) we prefer either a relevant subject (such as Design and Technology) or a traditional subject (such as History). We have a preference for applicants who study A level Further Mathematics (or equivalent).
We know that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. Mathematics is required at Higher Level and we strongly prefer applicants with Physics at Higher Level. In exceptional circumstances we may be able to consider you if you are studying Standard Level Physics. Our typical offer in this instance would be 36 points overall with 7, 6, 5 or 6, 6, 6 in three Higher Level subjects including 6 in either HL Mathematics plus 7 in Standard Level Physics.
We consider applicants studying the IBCP on a case-by-case basis based on the individual components studied. To be considered for this course you will need to study either Mathematics course at Higher Level alongside other IB Higher Level subjects or vocational study equivalent to two A levels. This vocational study can be any qualification we accept, such as a BTEC National Diploma (RQF) or two BTEC National Extended Certificates (RQF), and must include sufficient Engineering and Physical Science content. As a guide, we are typically unable to consider BTEC Diplomas in Engineering alongside HL Mathematics.

AA in two Advanced Highers including Mathematics and Physics.
We make offers based on Advanced Highers. You will typically be expected to have completed five Scottish Highers and your grades in these will be considered as part of your application. We prefer applicants who have achieved AAAAA in their Highers.
A pass in the Access to HE Diploma (in Science or Engineering) with at least 39 credits achieved at Distinction. This must include 12 credits from Mathematics units (including Calculus) achieved at Distinction and 12 credits from Physics units achieved at Distinction.
Our Mechanical Engineering courses are academically challenging and require solid foundations of knowledge in Mathematics and Physics. We are able to consider Access to HE Diplomas in Science or Engineering, and we are looking for you to be studying a suitable level of Mathematics and Physics to be able to succeed in our courses. You will need to have studied Mathematics units worth at least 12 credits (including Calculus) and Physics units worth at least 12 credits. However, due to the time-limited nature of Access programme delivery, it is expected that you will have also completed a significant level of independent study in order to further develop and refine these skills.
Pass units worth 120 credits including S217: Physics: From Classical to Quantum and a Distinction or Pass 1 (85%) in a relevant Level 2 Mathematics unit worth at least 30 credits.
Typically, we would be looking for you to have studied units worth at least 120 credits including at least 30 credits at Level 2 in Mathematics. We would ideally be looking for you to be taking units including MST124: Essential Mathematics 1 and MST224: Mathematical Methods and S217: Physics: From Classical to Quantum. This information is a guide and we consider students applying with Open University Credits on a case-by-case basis. We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. We may be able to consider alternative units to those listed. Taking OU credits may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans for the entirety of your chosen degree. Our Mechanical Engineering courses are academically challenging and require solid foundations of knowledge in Mathematics and Physics. We are able to consider HNC or HND qualifications in Engineering disciplines for entry into the first year of our course. You will need to gain an overall grade of Distinction, including a Distinction in at least 20 credits of Level 4 Mathematics. In addition, you will need an A level in Mathematics at grade A or a pass rate of at least 75% for the Open University module MST124: Essential Mathematics 1.
HNC and HND qualifications may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans for the entirety of your chosen degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.
GCSE grades are an important part of selection for this course and we typically expect students to have a good number of GCSEs at grade 7-9 or A-A*. You GCSE grades in Mathematics and Physics are particularly important and we typically expect grade 8-9 in at least one of these subjects.

Your tuition fees and how you pay them will depend on whether you are a Home or Overseas student.

You will normally pay a reduced tuition fee instead of the full year fee while on your work placement.
These are currently capped by the government at either 20% of the full-time fee for work placement or 15% for study abroad, or if the placements are part of the Erasmus+ scheme.

It may be possible to transfer onto the MEng degree once you have started your course. The MEng degree is covered by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS). Unless you are a citizen of the UK or another country exempted from ATAS clearance, you will need to obtain an ATAS Certificate before you can join the Meng degree. This unit introduces you to the fundamental principles of statics, kinematics and dynamics as applied in an engineering context. You will advance your understanding of key equations, derivations and proofs that provide a strong basis for future solid mechanics units. This unit introduces you to the fundamental concepts and equations of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. You’ll learn how to apply the equations to engineering problems, including power generation cycles and the generation of lift by an aerofoil.
On this unit, you will analyse and design closed-loop control systems that integrate actuation, sensing and electronic control hardware.
This unit introduces you to the techniques and constraints of professional, team-based design practice. In the first half of this unit, you will learn how to select, process plan and programme manufacturing process equipment to produce precision discrete components. The second half of the unit will focus on using techniques to plan, schedule and design complex and automated manufacturing systems.
