How can we design policies that not only address sustainability challenges but also remain effective over time? Why do some well-intentioned policies succeed while others create unintended consequences or fail to achieve their goals?
These questions sit at the heart of Global Chair Professor Benjamin Cashore's work on anticipatory policy design and policy learning. Professor Cashore is a world-renowned expert on environmental governance and public policy at the National University of Singapore.
Workshopping policy solutions
We invite sustainability practitioners across all disciplines, including academics, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, to join an interactive workshop exploring how we can develop more durable and effective policy solutions to complex environmental and sustainability challenges.
During the workshop, participants will be introduced to key elements of the Integrative Anticipatory Policy Design (IAPD) Framework, alongside related approaches that help identify why policies succeed, fail, or generate unintended outcomes. The session will explore how markets, regulations, norms and stakeholder learning interact over time, and how these insights can be used to design more effective policy pathways.
Who this workshop is for
This workshop is open to sustainability researchers and practitioners from all disciplines who are interested in policy design, governance, systems change, and real-world impact.
Come prepared
To make the discussion as relevant and practical as possible, we encourage participants to bring along a policy challenge, governance issue, or sustainability problem they are currently grappling with.
Some questions to reflect on beforehand:
- Is there a policy challenge that seems resistant to change?
- Have you encountered unintended consequences from a policy intervention?
- Has a policy ever undermined your research, objectives, or desired outcomes?
- What barriers are preventing effective implementation or lasting impact?
Through discussion, reflection, and practical examples, we'll explore how anticipatory policy design can help identify more effective and durable pathways forward.
We hope you'll join us for what promises to be a stimulating and highly interactive day of learning, discussion, and collaboration.
