Working with industry
Scientists and engineers in industry often have very different and valuable perspectives on research problems, shaped by the need to deliver profitable yet sustainable products to the market. Involvement of industrial partners in collaborative research projects, PhD projects or visiting positions is, therefore, a key feature of our work.
By involving external partners, we ensure that our students and staff keep their focus on industry-relevant research and gain experience in working with stakeholders outside academia.
With our innovation centre, the Innovation Centre for Applied Sustainable Technologies (iCAST), we aim to bring together academic expertise and industry to facilitate innovation in sustainable technologies. We also run multiple innovation programmes providing support and knowledge exchange between sectors, such as the Sustainable Technologies Business Acceleration Hub (STBAH) and the West of England Sustainable Technology Scale-up Programme, all of which provide us with close links with industry, from start-ups to multinational corporations.
Working with public and third sector bodies
Our sustainability research, covering low carbon living, resilience and social transformation, is rooted in partnerships work with communities, third sector groups, and government bodies. We work collaboratively with organisations in different sectors, and government bodies at all scales, to conduct new research, to summarise evidence and to review policy interventions.
With expertise around public engagement we also advise on how to involve people in decision-making processes.
We also work with community and grass roots organisations to trial and research interventions that can contribute to low-carbon living and evaluate success.
How we can work together
Our research collaborations with external partners can take the form of strategic corporate partnerships, industry-funded research projects, participation in Government-funded projects, funding or co-funding of PhD studentships, knowledge transfer partnerships, internships, visiting fellowships, consultancy, innovation support and more.
