Develop your academic writing

Clear and concise written communication skills are vital for your studies and in the workplace. The Skills Centre offers a range of support to help you develop your writing skills.

Writing drop-in

We run a regular drop-in service on campus in the Skills Zone (6 East 2.8) where you can speak to a writing tutor for up to 20 minutes. Please bring along your questions.

The drop-in takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12.15 to 2.05pm on certain weeks. Please check MySkills for the dates. Advance booking is not required.

Academic Writing Circles

Academic Writing Circles take place in the Skills Zone (6 East 2.8) and give students an opportunity to:

  • share and discuss their writing with peers
  • review and evaluate good writing practice
  • consider areas for improvement

Academic Writing Circles run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12.15pm to 1.05pm on certain weeks, with each session focusing on a different topic.

1:1 writing tutorials

We also offer 20-minute in-person and online 1:1 writing tutorials to help you with any formal piece of writing at any stage of your studies.

One of the writing tutors will give you constructive, practical suggestions on how to develop your writing technique and style.

Advance booking is required on MySkills. Please upload a draft of your work when you book a tutorial and provide details of the assignment, if applicable.

Feedback by email

You can also request to receive feedback on a piece of writing by email.

The writing tutor will send you their feedback within three working days.

Skills enrichment workshops

We run a programme of 50-minute skills enrichment workshops each Semester, many of which focus on academic writing, for example:

  • Improve your academic style
  • Reader-friendly writing
  • Report writing under the microscope

Self-access resources

You can access various online resources to develop your writing skills in your own time.

For example, a series of Lunchtime Learning resources aim to enhance your writing skills in just 15 minutes.
