Common issues in teaching spaces and how to fix them

Information and guidance on the most common IT and AV issues experienced by staff in teaching spaces and what staff can do to fix them.

Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) teams have been collecting information on the support they have been providing in University of Bath teaching spaces during Semester 1 2024. More than 60% of the support we have provided has been fixing common issues resulting from user activity in the room. Here is advice on how to fix these issues if you experience them.

PC display has been left in the wrong mode

To fix this:

  • press Windows + P to switch between display modes
  • select 'Duplicate' mode to show the same content on all displays

To avoid this problem for the next user, leave the display in 'Duplicate' mode.

Projector screen is blank

To fix this, press the 'Blank' button on the projector control screen to activate the projector screen.

To avoid this problem for the next user, leave the screen on using the 'Blank' button on the projector control screen.

Microphone is not charged

To fix this:

  • place the microphone in the charging dock
  • use an alternative microphone

To avoid this problem for the next user, place the microphone in the charging dock at the end of every session.

Cable is unplugged

There is a HDMI cable provided on the lectern for your own device or laptop. Do not unplug any cables in the teaching space.

USB device has been left in the PC

To fix this, remove the USB device from the PC.

To avoid this problem for the next person, remove your USB device from the PC at the end of every session.

PC has been left logged in

To fix this, log out of the PC and log in with your own account details.

To avoid this problem for the next user, log out of the PC at the end of your session.

No laptop or PC on the screen

To fix this:

  • make sure the projector or screen is switched on by using the ‘ON’ or 'Power' button on the projector control screen
  • check that you have selected your source on the control screen, such as PC, HDMI, or DocCam(Visualiser)

Microphone or sound is not working

To fix this issue:

  • wear a charged microphone if there is one available - the microphone will display a green light if it is charged
  • if audio isn't working on a video, check the volume on the PC is unmuted and turned up

The PC, mouse, or keyboard is not responding

If these devices aren't working, restart the PC by holding down the power button until it turns off. Press the button again to restart the PC.

The camera is not working on Microsoft Teams or Zoom

To fix this issue, shut down Microsoft Teams or Zoom and restart the session.

Displaying something different on a projector than what is on your PC

To fix this issue:

  • select ‘Extended desktop mode’ by pressing both the Windows and P keys simultaneously on your keyboard, followed by selecting ‘Extend’. You can then drag items onto the projection screen with your mouse
  • before you end your session, please remember to return to ‘Duplicate desktop mode’ by pressing both the Windows and P keys simultaneously on your keyboard, followed by selecting ‘Duplicate'

Finishing your session

At the end of your presentation or lecture, remember to:

  1. Place the radio microphone(s) back into the docking unit.
  2. Power down the projector by selecting the ‘OFF’ or 'Power' button on the projector control screen. This will reset the equipment for the next user.
  3. Remove any USB devices from the PC.
  4. Logout from the PC.
