The Skills Centre and Careers teams are committed to embedding sustainability into every aspect of our work, from teaching and student support to operational practices. We recognise that sustainability is not only an environmental concern but also a social and economic imperative that shapes the way we teach, support, and prepare students for their futures. We aim to model and promote sustainable values that empower students and staff to become responsible global citizens and professionals.
Sustainable practice in teaching and learning
We embed sustainability into our teaching and skills development by:
- promoting digital-first and paper-light approaches in our workshops, resources, and communications
- designing inclusive, accessible learning experiences that support long-term academic and professional growth
- encouraging critical thinking around the use of digital tools in education, global challenges, and sustainable development goals
We integrate sustainability into our educational approach by:
- reducing printed materials across all workshops and events by the end of the academic year
- ensuring 100% of new digital learning resources include references to sustainability where relevant
- delivering sustainability-themed workshops or webinars annually that explore global challenges, ethical leadership, and green skills
Promoting sustainability in education and employability
We champion sustainability as a core value in students’ academic and career journeys by:
- highlighting green skills and sustainable employment pathways in the advice to students
- seeking to collaborate with employers and alumni who demonstrate ethical and sustainable practices
- encouraging sustainability reflection in all career coaching and guidance sessions.
- embedding sustainable practice as a core capability in My Employability Profile
Sustainable day-to-day operations
We strive to maintain sustainable practices in our daily work by:
- minimising waste and energy use in our offices and activities
- effectively and critically using digital tools to reduce printing physical material
- encouraging flexible working and low-carbon commuting options where operationally feasible and efficient
- fostering a culture of sustainability through team initiatives, shared learning, and continuous improvement
- conducting bi-annual sustainability audits to review and improve our digital and physical resource use
- encouraging mindful use of lighting, heating, and equipment
Together, we aim to inspire and empower students to become thoughtful, responsible contributors to a sustainable world, both during their time at university and throughout their careers.
