Micro Internships offer short-term career exploration and development opportunities.

The Micro Internship programme offers an opportunity to explore career pathways

Our pilot Micro Internship programme offers 1-5 day learning and development opportunities available exclusively to University of Bath students. These are paid opportunities and may take place either remotely or in-person, depending on employer specification.

Usually taking place at the end of each semester, completing a Micro Internship will help you to develop your employability skills, add experience to your CV, and experience the reality of working in a particular role or sector.

Why do a Micro Internship

Undertaking a Micro Internship enables you to:

  • explore career options - because these opportunities are short, they are a great way to gain experience of different sectors, even in an area outside of your academic studies
  • get insight into workplace realities - a short work opportunity like this allows you to gain a real insight into day-to-day workplace tasks; meetings, presentations, time management and more
  • practice and develop key employability skills - acquire a range of skills such as problem-solving, communication skills, and commercial awareness
  • develop your professional network - Micro Internships provide a great opportunity to network with professionals, with some leading to longer work experience or graduate opportunities
  • build your personal profile - talk about the experience on CVs, professional profiles (LinkedIn) and at interviews
  • work without hindering your studies – all Micro Internships last 1-5 days and every effort is taken to ensure they take place at the end of semester, so you can gain work experience even if you have a busy academic schedule

Who can apply

All students at any level, both undergraduate and postgraduate, can apply for a Micro Internship. However, it's important to carefully read each job description to ensure you have the right skills and interests. For the pilot programme, students will be ‘employed’ by the University and will therefore need to undergo and pass a ‘Right to Work’ check, so you must be able to work within the UK.

Timings of the programme

The timetable for the pilot programme has Micro Internships running at the end of each semester. Please note that dates are subject to change. You should regularly check MyFuture for the latest opportunities.

Cohort 1 - Winter 24/25

This cycle has now closed.

Cohort 2 - Spring 24/25

Timings and dates for this cycle are currently being finalised. Applications are likely to be open for a month, with the Micro Internships themselves running during April 2025. If you would like to be notified when new opportunities are available, you can complete our Expression of Interest Form.

Applying

When there are available opportunities, all Micro Internships will be advertised on MyFuture.

Usually, Micro Internships are full-time hours (for example 9am - 5pm) each day or a maximum of 35 hours a week, although this is decided by the employer and will be communicated to you before you start. Some employers offer flexible working hours, and this is usually stated in the advert. Please ensure before applying that you are available and able to fully commit to the Micro Internship.

Remuneration

The pilot programme of funded Micro Internships are paid. You will be employed by the University and seconded to the hosting organisation. All the pilot opportunities will pay £12 per hour.

There may be other Micro Internships advertised on MyFuture that are voluntary learning and development opportunities and may therefore be unpaid. Each opportunity advertised will clearly state whether it’s paid or unpaid and you must be sure to clarify if you're uncertain.
