If you are an employer looking to take on University of Bath students for internships, please contact our Internships Team via internships@bath.ac.uk.
Aims of the programme
We know finding work experience can be a real challenge for students in years one and two as organisations often ask for evidence of prior experience and skills you may not have had a chance to develop. Bath Insights is an internship programme designed to give students in their first or second year the opportunity to gain work experience in a safe, supportive environment through working as an intern in one of a variety of departments on the University campus.
Bath Insights offers you the opportunity to work on a real project, developing a range of sought-after skills and competencies, while being supported by the host department and colleagues from the Careers Team. Through these internships, host departments are able to harness student creativity, ingenuity and energy, and you are able to develop workplace skills, and have the chance to contribute blue skies thinking and practical solutions to genuine projects. The programme is not intended to absorb existing ad hoc and temporary employment opportunities
How the programme works
The programme is open to most University of Bath undergraduate students in years one and two. If you’re studying a distance learning course or visiting the University on an exchange, you’re not eligible to apply.
Each internship lasts for 8 weeks. They are all full-time roles (36.5 hours per week), and are paid at Grade 2, which meets (or exceeds) the real living wage. Interns receive free on-campus accommodation.
The format varies between departments, but all internships are on-campus or hybrid. There are no remote-only internships, as a key part of completing an internship is gaining experience of working with colleagues in a professional working environment.
Why you should apply
The Bath Insights programme will give you a great opportunity to:
- get paid work experience at the university
- develop existing skills and build new ones
- participate in training and induction activities with fellow interns
- attend a celebration event to recognise your achievement
Taking part in the application process is also invaluable experience, whether you are successful in being offered an internship or not.
Application process
To apply for an internship, complete a standard application form and write a short statement (300 words) explaining why you want to apply for an internship and what you hope to gain. We recognise that these internships are intended for students with minimal or no prior work experience, so the application form and process will be as inclusive as possible.
Applications will be reviewed and a shortlist of students will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre. You’re not able to apply to a specific internship; instead, if you are successful, you will be matched by the panel to the most appropriate internship opportunity for you.
In 2025 internships will start on Monday 2 June and run until Friday 25 July. You must ensure that you’re available for the entirety of the internship, and that you can commit to working 36.5 hours per week for the full 8 weeks.
