The Capabilities Framework

The Capabilities Framework defines 13 capabilities that we know employers value in their graduates.

The Capabilities Framework underpins My Employability Profile and the Bath Award.

The Capabilities Framework is comprised of 13 capabilities that we know employers value in their graduates:

  • Adaptability
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Critical thinking
  • Data literacy
  • Digital and AI literacy
  • Drive and initiative
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Resilience
  • Social and cultural awareness
  • Sustainability

Background of the framework

The 13 employability capabilities that make up the Capabilities Framework are drawn from the three pillars of the Employability and Student Success Strategy, which aims to empower Bath students to be future focused, impact driven and socially minded.

Our Employability Commitment enables students to develop the capabilities through:

  • end-to-end Careers support, including access to alumni and peer mentoring, meaningful Careers-focused conversations, and opportunities to engage with employers and professional organisations
  • personal & professional development, via appropriate curriculum-led skills development, opportunities for personalised skills development, and supported reflective practice (record, reflect, review)
  • inspiring & enriching experiences, such as curriculum-led employability development, professional and entrepreneurial experiential learning, and rich extra-curricular activities such as volunteering, societies, and projects

Understanding the capabilities

My Employability Profile has a text and video description of each of the 13 capabilities. Both say the same thing, but enable you to choose how to absorb the information. Click on the link to jump to that capability and find out more about it:

Initiatives that are built on the framework

There are a number of centrally-led initiatives that provide a structured way for students to engage with the Capabilities Framework:

Other activities and experiences

The above initiatives use the Capabilities Framework as a scaffold, but almost all activities that you undertake during your time at Bath will contribute in some way to developing their skills and building their capabilities. Extracurricular activities like participating in societies, completing a placement, undertaking an internship, and part-time work all contribute to multiple capabilities. Even casual, less formal actions such as networking or attending a Careers Fair, will demonstrate capabilities such as Drive and initiative, Collaboration, and Resilience.

You should consider everything you do in the context of the framework, and add it to My Employability Profile.
