IAAPS

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the University of Bath are seeking to make a number of academic appointments as part of the Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS).

These opportunities range from Lecturer to Professor level in Sustainable or Electrified Propulsion Systems for automotive and other transport sectors.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join an established, world-class propulsion systems research group which is receiving substantial investment from the Government, Automotive Industries and the University.

How will you be involved

You will be expected to lead high-impact research programmes, provide excellent postgraduate research supervision, and deliver high-quality teaching. The successful candidates will make a major contribution in developing our portfolio of high-quality collaborative research in the electrified propulsion field. Therefore, we are interested in candidates with a proven track record in electrified propulsion of passenger cars, with a particular focus on the system level considerations. Broader experience of the wider automotive propulsion landscape will be advantageous.

Applications from industry or academic backgrounds are welcomed, particularly with expertise in battery systems (including battery pack design, energy management and BMS), electric vehicle drives (including power electronics and inverter design), motor design, and electric vehicle powertrain systems engineering. One of our key areas of activity has always been the development of new experimental and simulation techniques and these areas come together as the electric vehicle industry moves towards a more digital product development process. It is important for these appointments to help shape the development of new approaches, combining advanced research with novel experimental approaches to design the next generation of electric vehicle powertrain.

It is essential that the successful candidates for senior level appointments have a proven capacity to work with industry partners to secure funding for, and deliver, large research collaborations. We expect that the ideal candidates will collectively have an extensive network of close contacts within the industry and academic communities, both in the UK and internationally. Successful candidates for Lecturer appointments should have strong potential or an emerging profile in these areas.

This new research group will form part of the new £70m laboratory complex currently under construction, a key element of the Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS). The facilities are truly state-of-the-art and provide a unique capability to conduct advanced propulsion systems research. The Institute builds on 40 years of continuous propulsion research and education at the University including the new EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) in Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems, which over the next five years will provide at least 86 fully funded studentships for a four-year combined training and research programme leading to an MPhil and PhD. The successful candidates will play a leading role in the delivery of the CDT and supervision of doctoral students.

Candidates will develop and lead innovative new teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level within the Mechanical, and Electronic and Electrical Engineering Departments. These programmes will train and inspire the next generation of versatile and talented engineers needed to energise the electric propulsion sector and will include new courses on Automotive Engineering and Electric Vehicle Design. We have a long history of high-quality education (consistently ranked in the top 5 in the UK) with a strong emphasis on design thinking - an ideal environment to develop exciting new approaches to learning in disciplines linked to current research that will enable the transition of the propulsion sector to a sustainable future.

The current automotive propulsion research academic team has an excellent track record in delivering industry-relevant projects and has long-established collaborations with industrial partners. These new appointments are expected to benefit from, and contribute to, this strong industry partnership and will also have the freedom to explore fundamental research interests.

What's our ambition

Join a leading UK research institute focussed on sustainable, clean and affordable propulsion systems to help us transform the mobility sector.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a large, dynamic team at the interface between academic research and industry need. All research and innovation projects within IAAPS will involve multiple partners, academics, industry, catapults, technology translators. Academic staff will have the opportunity to lead a portfolio of projects from core research programmes through to short commercial projects.

How will we support you

IAAPS is a large and vibrant institute with a rich mix of established and early career academics and researchers. We will support your career development at all points. Mentoring is a key part of IAAPS strategy to develop and nurture a world class academic team.

Unique and different (flexible) experiences and potential career paths will be sought and promoted for all IAAPS academics. Flexible working arrangements will be considered as the focus will be on delivering results. Opportunities for continuous professional development and training will be promoted for all colleagues.

Do you share our drive and ambition to lead world class research into sustainable propulsion systems?

You will also need to:

  • Have a natural curiosity and creativity
  • Be highly collaborative, comfortable engaging with a wide group of people across multiple networks.
  • Be goal focussed, with a practical and thorough approach to achieving your ambitions.
Our commitment to you

We value, promote and celebrate inclusion. We believe that diversity of experience, perspectives, and backgrounds leads to a better environment for our staff and students. Our assessment approach ensures you will have the opportunity to promote your individuality, and we will make all offers based on your competencies and experience relative to the role. We are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments you may require.

We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity. We have made a positive commitment towards gender equality and intersectionality receiving a Silver Athena SWAN institutional award, and we are actively working towards a Gold award.

Within IAAPS, we will be reporting Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity (EDI) data for our recruitment, project participation, workshops, seminars, etc to delivery and management boards with EDI as a standing agenda item for review and action if necessary.
