Our purpose

Research With Impact

Our research is helping to change the world for the better.

Driving high-impact research is a core pillar of our University strategy. In 2022 we launched Research with Impact – an initiative to celebrate our cross-disciplinary research and showcase our ongoing commitment to contribute to the world around us.

Research with Impact puts the spotlight on our three key areas of focus: Sustainability, Digital, Health & Wellbeing. The research we’re undertaking in partnership with businesses and industry is advancing low carbon living. It’s paving the way for a sustainable future. And it’s leading to a future of improved health and wellbeing.

Discover more on our Research with Impact page, through articles and podcasts which showcase the research we’re delivering across our key focus areas. Here you’ll learn more about how we’re developing a sustainable alternative to palm oil, storing vaccines without refrigeration and making big data work for society.

Further research at Bath

Over 90% of the research we submitted to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 was awarded the classification of ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We’re continually seeking to push boundaries and make an impact for the future of our planet and its people.

Sustainability

We’ve introduced a number of sustainable food initiatives on campus. These include using seasonal food, reducing meat consumption, reducing food waste and minimising packaging – we no longer serve disposable takeaway drinks cups, for example. Our aim is to reduce the environmental impact of the food we eat. We’re committed to using and selling ethically sourced food in our hospitality outlets and catering services.

In January 2023, we launched the Institute for Sustainability (IfS). IfS aims to provide Bath's ever-expanding multidisciplinary research community with the leadership, resources and support needed to make a difference in tackling some of the most pressing issues facing society. Climate Action

In 2022, the University and SU declared a climate emergency and developed a framework with 11 principles and corresponding actions, setting out our commitment to tackle climate change.People with bikes

We take a joined-up approach across the University in our response to climate change, with key actions under the themes of:

  • Education – delivering education that empowers students to become future leaders and innovators in our response to the climate crisis
  • Research – enabling the transition to a low carbon future and delivering climate adaptation solutions
  • Footprint – tackling our own carbon footprint through technical solutions, student and staff engagement initiatives, and working with our supply chain as we transition to a net-zero carbon campus
  • Partnerships – working with schools, the local community and other organisations to address the climate crisis

Find out more about what we're doing across these four themes.

We have a dedicated Climate Action Team, who are helping the University to deliver a whole institution response to fight the climate emergency, within a community of driven staff members and students all seeking to drive transformational change.

We take our commitments seriously and report annually on our progress to ensure we are delivering on our goals.
