University of Bath student newspapers, 1966–1974

Digitising Sul: Read all about it!

We’ve digitised editions of the University of Bath student newspaper Sul published between 1966 and 1974. We did this to keep them safe – they’re super fragile – and to make them more easily accessible. They offer a rare and very valuable glimpse of student life when things here were first getting started, capturing the outlook, ideas and activities of students at the fledgling university they were helping to build. This value comes with complications, though. The newspapers are, inevitably, ‘of their time’. The language used and views expressed are not always what we would expect to find or tolerate today. By creating this digital collection we’re in danger of amplifying biases we’re working to displace so to provide context and counterbalance we invited students, staff and alumni to participate in a kind of enhanced curation that supports the transition of Sul as an artefact from the past into the future and prepares users for a better, fairer and richer digital encounter. The stories, responses, reactions and celebrations captured here are the result of this critical engagement.
