Our aim is to create real change with our research across disciplines and we are happy to showcase the following projects.
Using metal powder laser melting, our research on industrial 3D printing has helped to improve processes and develop new products with our industrial partners.
Open-source model is shared to help medics around the world in case of ventilator shortfalls
Our research develops mathematical modelling and numerical solution techniques for fluid systems. We cover fluid power, electromagnetic and piezoelectric systems and other technologies. We address automotive and aerospace engineering research challenges.
Our research improves the motion control of a wide range of electromechanical and hydraulic systems.
Investigating novel methods of increasing the efficiency of hydraulic systems whilst maintaining performance, cost-effectiveness, reliability and low noise.
We analyse and incorporate component and system characteristics into integrated system simulation models. This is crucial to the design of complex machines.
We research vehicle dynamics to support the automotive industry in creating safe and comfortable vehicles.
Much of our research is motivated by applications in the aerospace industry.
We work with industry on knowledge exchange, consultancy projects and through running courses for industrial engineers. We cover areas of systems modelling and design including control engineering, with access to our experimental facilities and software.
We offer Continuing Professional Development in fluid power, hydraulics, electrical drives and motion control. We can also tailor bespoke courses to your needs.

We offer PhD studentships in analytical and experimental research into next-generation machine systems. Find out more about our projects and how to apply.
The Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control (PTMC) was founded as the Fluid Power Centre in 1968. Our scope has grown beyond the original fluid power field to include electro-magnetic and piezoelectric systems and other technologies related to automotive and aerospace engineering. We have a world-leading reputation as a centre of excellence in fluid power, actuation, and the dynamics and control of electro-mechanical systems.
