The fundamental drivers for our research are climate change, innovative and holistic design and historical interpretation.

As a joint Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the promotion of collaborative research between both fields is fundamental to our research vision. This aspiration underpins our organisation into four interdisciplinary groups.

Research centres

The Department has had a long association with the industrially-funded Centre for Window and Cladding Technology, which strongly focuses on dissemination of best practice, support and training for industry.

Funding is obtained from research councils, the European Union, industry and international organisations in our pursuit of research excellence. We offer research-based degree programmes and research fellowships, and we regularly host academics from across the world for scholarly visits.

REF 2014 success

The Department was ranked joint first in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) for its submission in the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit of assessment. Overall, 90% of our research activity was graded as either world-leading or internationally excellent.
