“My research group is very active in terms of fieldwork, and I've also had the opportunity to travel to some amazing places. The research is a challenge, but it's one I'm continuing to enjoy.”

We have an outstanding research record. The latest Research Assessment Exercise rated us among the UK's top ten electronic and electrical engineering departments.
We carry out basic and applied research at the frontiers of engineering and science. Our work includes strong interdisciplinary connections to basic science and mathematics, which is a key recommendation of The Wealth of a Nation report.
Our research is funded by UK research councils, the EU and industry.
Research centres and groups
We have the following three research centres:
- Centre for Advanced Sensor Technologies
- Centre for Space, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science
- Centre for Sustainable Power Distribution
We also have a number of active research groups:
- Invert - a centre for imaging science
- Electromagnetics, machines and drives
- Microwave systems and propagation
Our academic staff, research fellows, post-doctoral researchers and postgraduate students carry out internationally significant work and publish in a number of journals.
Because our teaching is research-led, undergraduates learn about the latest findings. Many of them also have the chance to work with our research centres.
