Typical projects
As part of their projects, students have investigated:
- Submarine navigation systems
- Satellites
- Global positioning systems
- Wireless systems
- Lasers
- Speech therapy systems
They have also designed and built robots that:
- Juggle
- Respond to voices
- Solve mazes
Projects
Project and design work is a major part of all our BEng and MEng degree programmes.
You will take part in individual and group tasks and use dedicated electronics, computer, power and robotics laboratories.
How do projects work?
During the first two years you will learn about:
- Microprocessors
- Java and C programming languages
- Electronic control and design
In year three you will put your knowledge into practice. The entire second semester is dedicated to a group design and business project, which will develop your technical, design, team-work, financial planning, management and marketing skills.
The second semester of year four is devoted to an individual project, allowing you to work on a specialist topic. Students can suggest subjects themselves and often work with our research centres.
BEng students take shorter group and individual projects in the second semester of their final year.
Facilities
We have three well-equipped laboratories for project work. Each laboratory has:
- 48 PC stations
- Computer-controlled oscilloscopes
- Signal generators
- Multimeters
Our labs are designed to be similar to industrial workspaces, offering you an insight into the way professionals work.
Bath Mouse Race
Bath Mouse Race is a highlight of the second year. All students form teams and compete against each other by designing and building mini autonomous vehicles known as mice.
We hold a race day at the end of the third semester. The winning mouse is the one that completes the course in the fastest time.
