The University campus and access roads are open and bus services to campus are running as usual.
We have monitored weather and travel conditions overnight and routes to the University campus are clear, with public transport operating as normal.
We encourage everyone to travel with care and allow extra time for your journey to campus. Please be aware of icy patches on pavements, untreated roads, and cycle paths.
We are keeping the forecast under review and, if weather conditions deteriorate significantly, we will post a further communication using the channels below. As usual, we will try to keep retail and catering outlets open where possible.
In the event campus opening is restricted, we will post updates in the following sequence:
SafeZone App. To receive notifications, make sure you have them enabled on your device. To receive SMS messages, sign up to the Adverse Weather Group.
All-staff and all-student email.
If we do need to restrict activity on campus and in University buildings, we will let you know.
In the event of snow and sleet, many surfaces, including stairways, will be wet and slippery. Our Campus Services team will be making every effort to grit and prepare surfaces, but please take care when walking around campus. Health and Safety advice is:
Walk – don’t run. Wear non-slip footwear. Allow more time for your journey, just as you would if driving.
Try to leave hands free to aid balance and protect against falls.
Stick to footpaths and avoid steep banks and inclines.
Take extra care when walking, cycling or driving up and down hills.
On no account attempt to walk on areas of frozen water, including the lake, which is extremely hazardous.
University Staff
If you are planning on travelling to campus please plan ahead, check the Met Office website for updates and factor in extra time in case of travel disruption. Please read the University’s policy on staff attendance during adverse weather conditions. If you think you may need to work away from campus and University buildings, you can prepare to access University systems and applications with your own device.
University Students
Your department may schedule online teaching or assessment if in-person is not possible due to adverse weather. They will contact you directly if this is the case.
If you need a warm place to go, our drop-in Study Spaces include the Library, 10East, and Polden Commons, and the Virgil Building in the city.
Make sure you have downloaded the SafeZone app and have notifications enabled on your device.
