The annual Sustainability Awards is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the inspiring work of our staff and student community. At Bath, sustainability is not a standalone initiative, it is a shared responsibility woven through every aspect of University life. Achieving progress requires the collective energy, innovation and determination of our community.
Richard Jackson, Director of Sustainability and Space, shared:
Over the past academic year, we have taken tangible steps forward, from our research breakthroughs and innovations to empowering students with skills and knowledge to drive change. We are turning our values into action through our operations, policies and commitments. The path ahead is not simple, yet this work is necessary if we are to maintain our status as a top performing University. Our community rightly expect urgent and bold action, and so too do funders and partners.
Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Phil Taylor, spoke at the event and shared:
Events like today bring us together, to celebrate and look back on our collective impact, and they remind us of what is possible when we work with a shared vision and purpose. We must continue to work hard for sustainability, for a better institution and a better world.
Bath alumni leading in sustainable solutions
A standout moment from the event was hearing from Hugo Adams, the Chief Executive Officer of Kelpi and an MBA alumnus from the University of Bath. Kelpi is a trailblazer in sustainable biomaterials, manufacturing seaweed-based packaging designed to replace plastic. The concept was created right here in the University’s labs by Professor Chris Chuck who now sits on Kelpi’s board. Hugo’s journey is a powerful example of the innovative and progressive nature of our alumni, the importance of a values-driven business ethos, and gave a snapshot into how Bath's sustainability research is creating real-world impact.

Recognising achievements through our change programmes
More than 50% of departments across the University are now actively engaged in a staff sustainability programme, which includes over 350 members of staff. Through Green Impact and our lab sustainability programme LEAF, the growing participation reflects a strengthening culture of responsibility and dedication for embedding sustainability across all aspects of University life. The awards were an opportunity to celebrate the following achievements:
- 14 certified Green Impact teams
- 17 newly certified LEAF labs
Over 130 students and staff attended a Carbon Literacy course this year, with over 70 achieving certification. The course is an opportunity to better understand the climate crisis and be empowered with skills and knowledge to take action.
