The University of Bath is an inclusive, international community, with around 3,600 staff and 20,000 students representing 153 nationalities. We warmly welcome and value everyone in our diverse community and our priority is ensuring that our students, staff and visitors can live, study and work in safety.

We understand that the violence reported in some UK cities and towns is a cause for concern and fully appreciate that some current or prospective students or staff may be feeling anxious or may be worried about family or friends affected by these events.

In terms of travelling to and living in Bath, we would like to reassure you that there have been no reports of related violent incidents in Bath. We will continue to monitor the situation.

The city of Bath was ranked the second safest university town or city in England and Wales in 2023 by the Complete University Guide. This strong record on safety is based on Bath’s low rates of violence against people and low rates of burglary/robbery of personal property.

The University of Bath campus is located in Claverton Down and also has a strong record on safety, with Security presence 24/7. We also have safe, accessible spaces in the city centre, such as the Virgil Building.

We have a whole range of support services at the University, which are available both on campus and in town, including:

  • Our excellent Security team, who are here to help at all times; 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether on campus or in town.

  • A residence life programme to support students in University halls develop a sense of community, including ResLife Ambassadors, current students who previously lived in halls and regularly check in with our students.

  • Student Support with practical and wellbeing support services provided both in person and online. Students should speak with their personal tutor if they have specific circumstances they wish to discuss which could affect their studies.

  • The SU (Students’ Union) offers independent Advice and Support through the SU Advisors, you can book in meetings in person or online by contacting suadvice@bath.ac.uk. The SU also supports students and student groups through representation, campaigning, community building and bringing students together to support each other.

  • Staff members can access free and confidential counselling 24 hours a day, as well as a wealth of practical and wellbeing support and information from Health Assured. Colleagues should speak to their line manager if they have specific circumstances they wish to discuss, for example the need for flexibility in working patterns due to personal or family concerns.

  • Our Support and Report tool provides a mechanism for both students and staff to tell us about any harassment or discrimination that they might experience wherever they might be. This allows for reporting on behalf of someone else and also anonymous reporting.

  • A SafeZone app which enables you to immediately contact Security and notify them of your location and receive notifications in an emergency situation. We encourage all members of our community to download SafeZone to their mobile phones.
