Interview study
The interview consists of a one-to-one conversation with a member of our research team. This around one hour 1 hour, and can be completed online (via Teams or Zoom), over the phone, or in person at our Department of Psychology building at the University of Bath.
During the conversation, the researcher will ask you questions about:
- specific things the therapist did/ said which were helpful or unhelpful
- how this impacted on your emotions and thoughts in therapy
- how this supported or got in the way of you making positive change and recovery.
The conversation will be recorded.
As a thank you for your time, after the interview we will send you a £20 shopping voucher (Amazon).

Survey study
This involves completing an online survey, which takes about 20 minutes.
You’ll be asked to give some demographic information (age, gender, ethnicity), and some details about the kind of therapy you experienced.
After this, you’ll answer some questions about you experience of therapy, focusing on:
- specific things the therapist did/ said which were helpful or unhelpful
- how this impacted on your emotions and thoughts in therapy
- how this supported or got in the way of you making positive changes and recovery
As a thank you for your time, after the interview you will have the option of entering your email address to enter a prize draw to win one of five £20 Amazon vouchers. We hope to have around 30 people complete this survey in total.
