The Department of Computer Science is seeking outstanding individuals to join our rapidly growing AI & Machine Learning Research Group. We are open to appointments at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Reader level, depending on experience and fit.

We’re looking for someone with expertise in AI & machine learning to join our growing research group. Whether you're early in your academic career or already established as a research leader, we’re open to appointing at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Reader level — what matters most is finding the right person to complement and strengthen our team.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and demonstrate a strong understanding of AI and machine learning. Experience teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is essential, along with a commitment to research excellence, high-quality education, and enhancing the student experience.

If you are applying at Lecturer level, we would expect you to have an emerging research track record and clear potential for funding success and academic contribution. For a Senior Lecturer appointment, you should demonstrate an established research profile, successful grant capture, and evidence of academic leadership. If applying at Reader level, you will be expected to show a sustained record of research excellence, international recognition, and a clear strategic vision for leading research within the group.

Our Research


98% of our submitted research activity was ranked as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).

We research systems-wide issues ranging from mathematical foundations through visual and cognitive processes to artificial intelligence, human-centred design, and collaborative systems.

The Department of Computer Science has a large funding portfolio with a net worth of £17 million in directly managed grant income, and a further £30 million in partner funding. We have many external partners such as The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Sony, The Ministry of Defence, Qualisys, Lawn Tennis Association, British Athletics, British Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association. Our partnerships with international research institutes include Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbrucken; University of Auckland; National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo; and VISTA (York University, Toronto).
