SDPR: Getting the most out of your review

Course overview

A course for all staff to help you get the most out of your Staff Development and Performance Review (SDPR).


2020/21 Semester 1 courses: This course is likely to run in October, November and December.

This workshop aims to help those who are being reviewed for the first time to understand their role in this 2 way process. During the course delegates will have the opportunity to consider the objectives and benefits of performance review; explore the process and consider what they might wish to do in preparation for their review meeting. The course will cover:

  • the principles of a review meeting (considering the past, present and future)
  • preparing for the review meeting
  • setting SMART objectives

Who should attend

This course is suitable for you if:

  • you are about to be reviewed for the first time
  • you would like a refresher
  • you have previously found review meetings difficult to prepare for

Pre-work

Review and complete pre-work for this course.


This online course uses blended learning to make the most of your time, focusing the live sessions on interaction, knowledge sharing and practice, and ensuring you have plenty of opportunities to embed learning on the job. Please note that you will need to complete all accompanying work and come to the session prepared and ready to engage with your colleagues.

We recommend that you complete the online ‘Staff Development & Performance Review (SDPR)’ module on Moodle (accessed via self-enrolment) prior to being reviewed for the first time.

Before attending this course you will need to:

  • familiarise yourself with the relevant SDPR forms for your grade and job family and the related guidance.
  • Read and download the COURSE HANDOUT for the session, which you will find on ‘Staff Development & Performance Review (SDPR)’ module in Moodle (accessed via self-enrolment). Please have a copy, printed or online, to refer to during the session.
  • Be ready to share the benefits you have experienced from having a performance and development review.
  • Please have to hand paper and pens/pencils for the session.

  • approach the annual review with greater confidence
  • explain why performance and development reviews are carried out
  • describe the principles of a review meeting
  • describe how you will prepare for your review meeting
  • explain the reason for SMART targets

Book or cancel your place

Discussing your learning and development with your line manager

We assume that if you need permission or agreement to attend this course you will have arranged this before booking, and have also jointly discussed the following with your line manager to ensure that the training is suitable and your learning can be transferred back to the workplace:

  • how this training will help to deliver your individual/team goals
  • the expected outcomes (i.e. what is expected to change/improve as a result)
  • any support required post-course to enable you to transfer your learning back to the workplace

Your manager will receive an automated notification when you book or cancel a place on a course using ESS.

Book a place

Once a course date has been arranged you can book your place using Employee Self-Service (ESS). Places will be available to book on self-service up to 24 hours before the course, to allow for participants to complete the required pre-work. You must book a place to be able attend. Download instructions on how to book your place using ESS.

The session will be delivered online. You will receive the 'zoom link' to the session within an automated email reminder, provided 1 week before the course date. If you have not used zoom previously, you are required to register. Information can be found here.

Please ensure you are set up ready for the virtual session '5 minutes before the course start time' and that you have switched your camera 'on' before joining the interactive session.

Please note that we do not hold a waiting list for this course.

Cancel your place

You can cancel your place using Employee Self-Service (ESS). Download instructions on how to cancel your place using ESS.

Please cancel your place as early as possible, and at least 3 days in advance, to allow others to book instead.
