PROCEDURE
The university’s Honorary and Visiting Appointments process has been taken as a guiding principle when appointing Visiting Chaplains and Religious Advisers to the university.
A proposal for the conferment of a Visiting Chaplain or Religious Adviser is considered by the Chaplain (or other responsible person) and the Deputy Director (Culture and Inclusion). The proposal will state how the nominee meets the needs of the role, the nature of their contribution, the length of their attachment to the university and will include a current CV, a statement regarding their standing in their faith community, 2 character references, together with confirmation that they hold a current DBS certificate and that their safeguarding training is up to date.
If approved, a letter will be sent to each individual confirming their appointment. Appointments are made for a 12-month period, which is renewable and newly appointed Chaplains or Advisers will receive a university induction. They will also be issued with a university email account and a Library ID card for the duration of the appointment. Each new appointee will also have a person profile web page which will be linked to the Visiting Chaplain or Religious Adviser team profile page.
The holder of a Visiting Chaplain or Religious Adviser title is required to submit a written report to the Deputy Director of HR (Culture and Inclusion) on their activities at the end of their appointment period. An appointment may be extended provided that the Deputy Director (Culture and Inclusion) has received a satisfactory report on the contribution made during the previous period of attachment, including those carried out independently or in conjunction with members of the university.
A Visiting Chaplain or Religious Adviser title may be surrendered by the holder by giving notice in writing to the Deputy Director of HR (Culture and Inclusion), who also has the power to revoke any title where satisfied that the individual concerned has acted in such a way as to bring the university into disrepute.
