Data science drives a significant proportion of global economic activity from healthcare to finance and technology. It's influencing scientific progress across numerous fields including bioscience, energy and telecommunications.

This course provides you with the computational skills, tools and strong mathematical foundation preparing you for a career in industry. You'll gain practical, analytical and software skills to proficiently gather, process and analyse data, preparing you to tackle complex challenges in modern data science.

To ensure you’re well prepared for the course, you will need a good first degree in a numerate subject such as computer science, mathematics, physics, economics, engineering, or relevant social sciences. You should also be able to demonstrate proficiency in mathematical topics such as calculus and linear algebra, possess some familiarity with probability and statistics, and have a good foundation in programming.

Specialist facilities

You will have access to purpose-built teaching labs, including a maker lab, allowing you to explore, create, experiment and share software-driven and physical artefact projects in a collaborative workspace context. Complex, data-intensive processes can be analysed over our in-house GPU Cluster. You will have access to most of our specialist labs 24/7.

Project examples

The research expertise in the department allows for a wide-range of subjects for your final project. Recent examples from Data Science students include:

Course structure

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in September 2025 and ends in 2026. Welcome week starts on 22 September 2025.

Placement

This is the one-year version of the course without placement. We also offer this course with a placement year, giving you the opportunity to gain work experience as part of your degree.

Learning and teaching

Overall workload

You should expect to spend approximately 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. These hours consist of structured activities and independent learning. You will experience a mix of in person teaching, that will take place on campus, and structured online learning delivered through the University’s virtual learning environment.

Structured learning activities

MSc programmes deliver taught unit/modules in the first and second semester, with the Summer dedicated to a dissertation. The second semester will have less structured learning as you will start to prepare for your dissertation. Both during the dissertation preparation and the dissertation, supervision will take place at times suitable to you and your supervisor.

You can expect to spend between 9 to 18 hours engaged in structured learning activities per week, of which the majority will be in timetabled sessions on campus, and the remainder online.

In-person teaching and online activities

Timetabled sessions delivered in person on campus will be a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and laboratories. Online activities may include following a recorded lecture, or other learning materials, or joining a timetabled live interactive session through Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

Independent learning

The remainder of your time outside these structured activities will be spent in independent learning which includes individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams.

To support you in your studies you will be able to access, outside of timetabled learning, facilities on campus and in Bath such as study spaces, computers, and the Library.

Our courses have been accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) for more than 30 years.

The BCS conducts a reaccreditation exercise every few years or when we make changes to the course. We will be seeking reaccreditation of this transformed course during the next available round.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

British qualifications

You should have a first or strong second-class Bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent.

Analytic software technologies

5 credits

Learn key software skills and fundamental tools to develop solutions for Data Science and AI problems. You will learn a programming language (e.g. Python) and explore its key libraries, main data structures and essential database knowledge, and learn to navigate factors influencing solution complexity, performance, and scalability.

Applied data science

10 credits

You will work in teams to get hands-on experience in the design and development of practical data science systems (DS). You will initially focus on basic problem framing and knowledge processing, before applying DS algorithms and exploiting relevant software tools and libraries. You will learn how to critically evaluate and communicate outputs while appreciating legal, ethical, social, and professional implications of intelligent systems.

This unit spans the following periods of study:

Bayesian data science

5 credits

Gain an appreciation of the philosophy and practical features of Bayesian inference and understand its advantages and general relevance in data science and machine learning. You will learn how key algorithms and methods can be implemented and exploited in both generic and machine learning contexts.

Foundational machine learning

10 credits

Develop an understanding of the basic theories of probability, calculus and linear algebra and an appreciation of how these concepts underpin algorithmic approaches to machine learning. You will learn about a range of core machine learning techniques and will recognise how principled mathematical foundations are fundamental to the successful application of machine learning in practical scenarios.

Research and development project skills

5 credits

Identify a problem in Computer Science, conduct a review into the state of the art, and plan a project to meaningfully address it. You will cover project management concepts, such as resourcing, risk or scheduling, and explore how projects can be managed through software engineering activities or using academic research skills. Gain skills to help work on software projects for your dissertation or future work in industry.

Spatio-temporal analytics

5 credits

Explore techniques for managing, processing and modelling spatial and sequential data, exploiting the latest statistical methodology and software tools. You will experiment with data, utilise geographical information systems and spatial image analysis libraries, and develop time series processing algorithms. Address spatiotemporal data-driven problems across applications and modalities, in areas like IoT sensor engineering, environmental modelling, financial fraud detection and urban studies.

Specialist project

30 credits

You will carry out a project in computer science where you will propose, contextualise, perform, and critically evaluate your work, and disseminate the results to an expert audience.

Statistical data science

5 credits

Acquire an understanding of the principles of probabilistic modelling in real-world data science and learn to spot and avoid pitfalls associated with contemporary statistical practice. Explore appropriate methodologies for a given context, encompassing probabilistic approaches, statistical model types, experimental designs, and decision-making criteria. Apply baseline statistical techniques across varied real-world contexts, employing a range of software tools, and report on the outcomes.

Understanding deep learning

10 credits

Gain an understanding of deep learning techniques, ranging from foundational knowledge to recent advancements in the field. You will study shallow and deep networks, how they are trained, and how performance is measured and can be improved. You will explore common architectural variations such as multi-layer perceptron, convolutional neural networks, residual connections, generative models and transformers. You will learn how to apply deep learning techniques to solve real-world problems.
