Chemistry with Management BSc (Hons)

3 years, starting in September 2021

Gain a broad education in chemistry and the business environment. You’ll be prepared for a career in scientific or management areas.

This course allows you to combine your love of chemistry with an interest in how business works. You’ll gain a broad education in chemistry with an understanding of the theories of chemical behaviour and how they are applied. At least a quarter of the units you’ll study will be management topics, delivered by the School of Management.

You’ll develop an understanding of the social, legal and economic implications of the decisions that managers in chemical and related industries are required to make. During the course, you’ll gain an understanding of the theories of chemical behaviour and how they are applied. You will also develop skills in experimental chemistry and in designing experiments to test hypotheses.

You can specialise in a particular field through optional chemistry and management units and a final year project. You’ll draw upon the expertise of academics in both the School of Management and Department of Chemistry, and could even contribute to the research being carried out. There will also be opportunities for you to put your chemistry knowledge into practice in research laboratories and other professional environments outside the University.

Our chemistry degrees have the same core units in the first year giving you the flexibility to switch courses.

If you want a more in-depth study experience, you could consider applying for our MSci Chemistry with Management course.

Put your learning into practice

Alongside teaching, our academics carry out research in all branches of chemistry and you’ll have the chance to work alongside them on your own project. You can also apply what you’ve learnt during your degree at public engagement events and in schools.

Use specialist facilities

You’ll learn core experimental skills in our well-equipped labs. You can also access our characterisation facilities to familiarise yourself with spectroscopy (NMR, IR, UV) and other techniques such as mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, microscopy and chromatography.

You'll receive a free lab coat and safety glasses to use throughout your course when you start.

Take a look at an undergraduate lab session in our 360 video.

Prepare for your future

A wealth of career opportunities are open to you as a chemistry graduate. You could go on to work in technical areas, or scientific research and development in materials, pharmaceuticals, energy and the environment. You’ll also be well suited to broader roles in education, scientific publishing, patents, administration and finance, or further study such as a PhD or PGCE.

2021/22 Academic Year

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, information about courses starting in September 2021 may be subject to change. We continue to improve your teaching and learning experience so you gain skills and understanding which are valuable to you and sought after by employers.

Before you apply for a course, please check the website for the most recently published course detail. If you apply to the University of Bath, you will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

During the 2020/21 Academic Year, our courses are being delivered through a blended learning approach. The Bath Blend has been designed to be flexible in the face of possible changes in law or official government guidance, including measures on social distancing which may occur through the course of the next academic year and other changes to the operating environment for Universities which may be caused by the pandemic.

Information for students on our plans for the 2020-21 academic year.

Course structure

This course lasts 3 years. It starts in September 2021 and ends in 2024. Welcome week starts on 27 September 2021.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You can choose from a number of optional units in years 1, 2 and 3. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Placement

We also offer this course with a placement year, giving you the opportunity to gain work experience as part of your degree.

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

Learning

  • Laboratory sessions
  • Lectures
  • Practical sessions
  • Seminars
  • Tutorials
  • Workshops

Assessment

  • Coursework
  • Dissertation
  • Essay
  • Multiple choice examination
  • Oral assessment
  • Portfolio
  • Practical work
  • Seminar
  • Written examination

Assessment breakdown

The balance of the assessment by examinations and assessment by coursework may depend on the optional units you choose.

A broad range of assessments methods will be used throughout the degree. As a guide, approximately 34% of assessment is by coursework over the duration of the course.

The final degree classification is determined by your second, and final year marks and each contributes 32% and 68% respectively.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, independent learning and assessment activities. The balance of these elements within your overall workload may vary depending on the units you choose.

Contact hours

Timetabled contact hours, which can be made up of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes, vary throughout your course and between courses but are typically between 18 and 23 hours per week in your first year.

Independent learning

In addition to timetabled contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent learning and assessment activities. Typically, this might be around 15-20 hours per week, and include individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams. After your first year, the emphasis on independent learning becomes greater, for example you may do a final year project in the final year.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and apply for membership with the accrediting body. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more exams.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practice a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practice your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.
