Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing and Management MEng (Hons)

5 years with professional placement, starting in September 2024

Learn how engineering, manufacture and management work together to find product solutions in industry. Explore the creation process from design to end product.

Our course develops your understanding of the sciences and disciplines relating to manufacturing. You’ll study engineering, manufacturing and management to understand their role in production processes.

We draw on our links with industry to build your knowledge of the integrated systems, processes and technologies used in advanced manufacturing. Learning about the latest engineering developments will inspire you to explore low-carbon and sustainable ways to produce high-quality products.

You’ll translate ideas into practice through Group and individual projects, where you'll to take imaginative approaches to solve complex engineering problems. You could explore new business or engineering technologies in areas such as aerospace, automotive, sports equipment, medical devices, or data management.

In your last two years, you'll study specialist units including Business processes, Data analytics and artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing technology. You'll also be able to choose advanced optional units to decide what topics you want to learn in more depth. This, followed by an individual project, allows you to develop and apply your knowledge in areas that interest you most. When you graduate, you'll understand how to design, operate and control manufacturing systems.

Shape your degree experience

You don't need to worry if you haven't made your mind up about whether to study a BEng or MEng yet. Once you're here at Bath, you'll have until the end of your second year to move between any of our BEng and MEng courses.

Read a blog post by Dr James Scobie on reasons why you should consider studying an MEng over a BEng degree.

Learn from experts in the field

We are invested in helping you get the most out of your learning experience. You’ll learn from academics with expertise in mechanical engineering and established links with industry. They have knowledge in design, manufacture, materials, automotive and aerospace. Learning and teaching

Contact hours

Our teaching for this course is delivered through in-person learning on campus, supported by high quality online provision.

In your first year, you'll typically have around 15 to 20 hours of timetabled sessions a week, made up of lectures, seminars, and laboratory classes. The significant majority of contact hours over the duration of your course will be in person, and this will be enhanced by some online delivery which will constitute a smaller proportion of these contact hours, depending on your programme of study, year of study and chosen optional units. This may be supplemented by additional activities such as a small number of online learning sessions (not live), skills development sessions, and personal tutorials.

In later years, the amount of timetabled sessions on campus may vary based on the options you choose, with a greater emphasis on independent learning. Project and dissertation units will generally have fewer scheduled sessions to allow you time for your independent work. This may also mean the number of hours of timetabled sessions each week will vary within a year.

Overall workload and independent learning

Outside your timetabled contact hours, you're expected to carry out independent learning and assessment activities to support your studies. Typically, you should expect to spend a total of 35 to 40 hours on scheduled sessions and independent study each week. Examples of independent activities may include:

  • individual research
  • reading journal articles and books
  • working on individual and group projects
  • working through problem sheets
  • preparing coursework assignments or presentations
  • revising for exams

Assessment breakdown

The balance of assessment by coursework, exams and practical work will vary throughout your degree, depending on the optional units that you choose. As a guide, 40-50% of the course will be assessed by coursework and practical work, and 40-60% by examination. In your third year, you’ll complete a group project and in your final year, you’ll complete an individual project or dissertation. You’ll be assessed individually but you may also be assessed as part of a group.

We can make reasonable adjustments to assessment procedures for students with disabilities, take a look at our Disability Service’s pages for information.

Professional accreditations

By studying a course with a professional accreditation, you could have the chance to get workplace experience, learn about new developments in the industry and become part of a national engineering community. You may also be able to apply for jobs in the industry without having to do any more academic exams.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

The United Kingdom currently subscribes to The Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications (MRPQ) Directive. The MRPQ Directive provides a reciprocal framework of rules which enables European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals to have their professional qualifications recognised in a state other than the one in which the qualification was obtained. In the event of a no deal Brexit, from 1 January 2021, the MRPQ Directive will no longer apply to the UK. However, it is anticipated that there will be a new system for recognising professional qualifications between the UK, EEA, and Switzerland.
