Donate to charity through your pay

Payroll Giving is a way of donating to charity without paying tax on your gift.

Do you want to fund research to fight cancer; protect endangered species; or help stop climate change? Giving to the causes you care about the most enables charities to carry out their crucial work and make a real impact. By giving through payroll, however, you won't pay tax on your one-off or regular donations.

How to register for Payroll Giving

The University is registered with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) who operate a Give As You Earn (GAYE) service.

Donations are made as a deduction from your salary and done before the calculation of PAYE, which gives you a tax concession on the amount donated. This money is then paid to CAF who will distribute it to your chosen charity. Please note that the scheme only operates with UK registered charities.

To set up a new donation or amend existing instructions, please visit the University page on the CAF website.

Payroll Giving is a tax-efficient way of donating to the cause you care about – you receive tax relief on your donation so the cost to you is less, but your charity receives the original amount you decided to give.

The tax relief you get depends on the rate of tax you pay.

You donate £5.00 £7.50 £10.00 £15.00
Cost to you as a 20% basic rate tax payer £4.00 £6.00 £8.00 £12.00
Cost to you as a 40% higher rate tax payer £3.00 £4.50 £6.00 £9.00
Cost to you as a 45% additional rate tax payer £2.75 £4.13 £5.50 £8.25
