SETsquared is the enterprise partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. The Scale-Up Programme was established Dec 2017 following the award of a £5m Connecting Capabilities Fund grant by Research England and expanded in 2018 when Cardiff University joined the programme enabled by funding from HEFCW. 

The purpose of the programme is to enhance the use of the SETsquared  Partners’ knowledge base to deliver commercial and business applications and impact in the economy and society; pool Knowledge Exchange (KE) expertise and capabilities so that businesses and other users can access a range of KE offers and critical mass of knowledge; build cross-university capacity to respond to industrial strategy challenges; and incentivise the sharing of expertise in KE and commercialisation and the dissemination of good practice in the HEI sector. 

The Scale Up Programme aims to achieve these goals with high-growth SMEs (Scale-Ups) in key innovations sectors including Health & Wellbeing, Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing, Sustainable Technologies and Marine and Maritime. The Programme is funded to March 2021. 

The role will lead the SETsquared Scale-Up Programme and its team to deliver ambitious KPIs for this six-university collaboration. The project will enable the SETsquared Partnership to develop new collaborations with some 280 scale-up companies and expand the Partnership’s 17 year focus on supporting early stage companies. The post holder will need to deliver on the strategic outcome of the Scale Up Programme to create a new model of “inter-EI” collaboration.

Additionally you will provide leadership and direction on the creation and implementation of strategies to ensure the success of the programme across a team which includes direct reports and across distributed/matrix managed team members as well. Part of the role is to initiate, and build relationships internally and externally, with both public and private organisations, engaging at a senior level in all environments
