A Research Associate position is available as part of a team in the medical robotics group at the University of Bath, designing and testing a new drill guidance system for assisting surgeons with orthopaedic hand surgery. The project will develop and evaluate tracking algorithms and user interfaces, integrate them into a package suitable for use in the operating theatre, and conduct clinical and non-clinical investigations to quantify the effectiveness of the system in improving patient outcomes. The work forms part of an NIHR-funded project, working with surgeons at the Royal United Hospital and culminating in the validation of the device as a new medical product for use across the NHS. The role being advertised is for the principle researcher responsible for the technical development and evaluation of the guidance system.
Applicants should possess a PhD degree, or an equivalent professional qualification, in subject area of relevance for the project and preferably have a record of post-doctoral research experience or other relevant experience. Applicants should have experience developing vision tracking algorithms, and experience developing for embedded systems. Evidence of good programming practices will be considered favourably. Experience working with medical devices or as part of a medical team is beneficial but not necessary, and experience with CAD and basic mechanical design is also advantageous. Applicants must be comfortable working as part of a collaborative team across multiple institutions and different disciplines, and should have demonstrable acumen in writing for academic publication. Candidates should be self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills.
