The Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering requires an adaptable and self-motivated Laboratory Technician to provide support at its Wroughton Airfield research facility (called the Building Research Park, or BRP) in Swindon.

The BRP is a national resource for the testing of near-scale or full-scale buildings and their components. Current research being carried out at the BRP includes designing and testing better refugee shelters for use in Jordan and the testing of flood resistant walls. The site includes a large climate chamber that can simulate climates around the world. You will be responsible for providing support to the research staff and students visiting the BRP.

You should have a background in engineering or science disciplines or related subject areas. Experience of having worked in instrumentation and/or an engineering laboratory or similar environment would be advantageous.  You will also need to be able to demonstrate practical ability.

Most of the work will be conducted remotely on the BRP site, but occasional independent travel to the University campus in Bath is required.

The post is part-time (14.6 hours per week) and is highly flexible, for example, you might choose to work on certain days or certain hours, therefore suiting those with other responsibilities. The post is being offered on a fixed-term contract basis, initially for a duration of 18 months.

Due to the location of this role you will need to have your own means of transportation as there is no public transport to the site.

Benefits:

You will also be entitled to a very generous 19.5% employer contributory pension (8.8% employee contributions) as well as the following employee benefits:

  • 36 days holiday pro-rata, (annual leave, discretionary days and bank holidays)
  • A flexible working environment
  • Ofsted outstanding rated onsite nursery
  • Salary exchange scheme (cycle to work)
  • Interest-free loans for public transport seasons tickets and motorcycle purchases for commuting
  • Onsite private and NHS dentist, onsite medical centre
  • Discounted physiotherapy service
