The Department of Psychology at the University of Bath has an established tradition of theoretically informed applied psychology, of methodological innovation and interdisciplinary research.  It is currently completing a significant expansion. Research in the Department occurs across all major sub-disciplines in psychology, including clinical, cognitive, developmental, environmental, health, and social.

We use diverse methods from psychology and neuroscience in a new purpose-built five-level building, containing two floors of state-of-the-art labs for interview, group observation, EEG/ERP, virtual reality, psychobiology, eye-tracking, pain, cross-modal and computerised testing. The breadth of our methodological approaches makes us distinctive in our research and teaching.  We also run a highly successful placement scheme, which ensures that our students receive excellent training in research and clinical skills and have links with leading research centres around the world.

The appointment could potentially help to expand the capacity of the Department within any or all of the Department’s major sub-disciplines – clinical, cognitive, developmental, health, and social – but is expected to bring expertise in neuroscience methods (e.g., EEG/ERP or fMRI techniques).  We are also keen to use such expertise to support growth in areas related to economic, forensic, or educational psychology, and to build on our growing research strength in the psychology of digital/online behaviour.

We are seeking applicants with demonstrable research quality and impact. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, staff were returned in different units of assessment, the largest of which (Allied Health Professions) obtained the highest REF2014 rating across the whole University. The University was ranked 12th overall in the UK in REF2014. The Department was recently ranked 1st in the Guardian league table and 2nd in the Complete University Guide, and The Times Good University Guide.  More information about the Department can be found at

The University of Bath is situated in the beautiful World Heritage City of Bath and is part of the GW4 group of leading Universities (with Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter). Bath is also a member of the ERSC-funded SWDTP. Bath is 15 minutes from Bristol by train and 90 minutes from London and Oxford.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Greg Maio (Head of Department;; +44 (0)1225 384647) or Professor Julie Barnett (Deputy Head of Department;; +44 (0)1225 383167).

As part of the application process, please state on the application form which post you wish to be considered for (Senior Lecturer or Reader).

Interviews are anticipated to be held 27 February 2018 and 1 March 2018 (TBC).

The University of Bath has a bronze award from the Athena SWAN Charter Scheme. Both the Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment.
