Seoul mates: a study year abroad in South Korea

Computer Science student, Nischal Thapa, describes how much he gained from his year at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.

Seoul
The wider city of Seoul catered to every interest and budget, providing me with endless opportunities to explore new experiences with the other national and international students.

The best year of my life

I anticipated the potential for personal development and growth in studying abroad for a year during my degree and I wasn’t wrong. My time at Yonsei University was one of the best years of my life. The atmosphere on campus, particularly during events and festivals was positively overwhelming and vibrant.

As well as broadening my knowledge and skills through my experiences with others from around the world, I was able to take some interesting additional course units unavailable at Bath.

Time to explore

The area around the University campus offered plenty of food and entertainment, with activities available throughout the day.

The wider city of Seoul catered to every interest and budget, providing me with endless opportunities to explore new experiences with the other national and international students. At weekends, I travelled further afield, discovering other parts of the country and the cities outside Seoul.

Support and advice

The international offices in Bath and Yonsei were extremely supportive throughout the year, whatever I needed. A local student mentor in Yonsei was also on hand to help.

There were some inevitable culture shocks and language barriers but the locals were understanding and truly welcoming, easing the process of adapting to the new environment.

Studying abroad for a year is a wonderful opportunity to expand your knowledge and understanding of another culture. It is a one-year commitment though, so it pays to do your research before you commit.

‘Seoul catered to every interest and budget, providing me with endless opportunities to explore new experiences with the other students.’
