The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has a unique character as the only interdisciplinary department in the UK.

Our student standards are among the highest in the country for both disciplines, both at entry and at graduation.

Teaching

We have around 600 undergraduate students, 100 MSc students, over 50 research students and staff, and around 35 teaching and research academics.

Due to the joint nature of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, collaborative, integrated design is central to our studio teaching across all disciplines.

All our undergraduate programmes can be taken as sandwich courses with supervised industrial placements.

Research

Sustainability within the built environment is core to our teaching and research and is reflected strongly across our degree programmes and research centre activities.

Research is organised around two centres BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials (BRE CICM) and Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA) and one unit, Energy and Design of Environments (EDEn).

Our research is in the top 5 in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. 70% of staff entered were graded as either internationally leading or internationally significant in their field.
