Computer Science PhD student, Tobias Bertel has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from The Rabin Ezra Scholarship Trust.

The Trust recognises and rewards promising junior research students in the fields of computer science or information technology. It was started in 2007 in memory of computer scientist, Dr Rabin Ezra and has awarded annual scholarships since.

Tobias received £3,500 for his research in visual computing involving everything related to light fields, multi-view geometry and image synthesis. He will use the award to attend conferences and buy new hardware.

He said: “It is a great honour to me that excellent people believe in my research ideas. The bursary empowers my confidence and I am looking forward to the upcoming months and years here at the University of Bath.”

“Technically, I want to increase the action space of 360 degree video content by employing Multi-View Geometry and light field concepts.”

“Besides being able to look around when watching 360 degree videos, I want to be able to move my head around as well by creating suitable new views on-the-fly from the captured video.”

Tobias is expected to update the Trust on his research in around five months' time.
