Psychology BSc (Hons)

3 years, starting in September 2020

Gain a solid grounding across the discipline with a focus on biological, clinical, cognitive, health and social psychology.

This course offers the rigour of a science degree, with insights into every aspect of psychology recognised by the British Psychological Society.

In Year 1, you will gain an understanding of basic concepts, methods and theories in psychology. In Year 2, you will cover the core areas of psychology and be introduced to research methods and project work. You will be trained in experimental methods, questionnaire research and qualitative analysis. Optional units enable you to study topics that are not always found in psychology degrees. These include health psychology and clinical psychopathology, as well as units from other subjects.

In your final year, you’ll complete a research project and select optional units relating to the current research interests of academic staff.

Teaching

You’ll learn from academics with expertise in clinical, health, social, developmental, and cognitive psychology. Their international collaborations and research activities feed into teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Facilities

The Department of Psychology is located in a £30 million building. You’ll use the dedicated space for your seminars, group meetings and computer work.

There are two floors of advanced psychology research space. This includes:

• an electroencephalogram (EEG) scanner • a virtual reality lab with motion sensor cameras • rooms for observation, interview and focus group research • a biopsychology suite with two-way mirror • eye-tracking equipped computers • sensory and pain research suite • crossmodal laboratory including a soundproof room

Careers

A psychology degree prepares you for clinical, counselling, health, educational, market research and occupational roles. It is also valued in communications, management, police work and social research careers.

Graduate destinations include:

  • Oxford Health NHS
  • King’s College London
  • Revealing Reality
  • HMRC
  • Community Access Support Service (CASS)
  • Behavioural Health
  • Hays plc

Much professional work in psychology requires further specialist training. Over half of our graduates go on to specialist graduate training in psychology.

Course structure

This course lasts 3 years. It starts in September 2020 and ends in 2023. Induction week starts on 21 September 2020.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Units

At Bath, our courses are made up of units of study. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you'll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

As an undergraduate, you will be expected to take 60 credits (ECTS) in each academic year. These are usually split into 30 credits for each semester you study. Sixty credits are the equivalent of 1200 notional hours of study; this includes contact time with staff and your own independent learning.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You can choose from a number of optional units in years 1, 2 and 3. Here are some examples of the units currently being studied by our students.

Entry requirements

Your previous academic study is also important. For example, if you have taken GCSEs we prefer applicants with a strong set (such as grade A*, 8 or 9 in at least five relevant GCSEs or grade A or 7 in the majority of your GCSEs). We strongly prefer applicants who can demonstrate a solid grounding in mathematics (or statistics), such as those with GCSE grade A or 7 in Mathematics.

We prefer applicants with entry qualifications that demonstrate a high level of study in both essay-based and numerical or analytical subjects. For example, if you are studying qualifications with a narrow range of subjects (such as A levels) we prefer both a numerical or analytical subject (like Biology) and a humanities or social science subject (like Sociology). If you are taking a qualification which includes a wider range of subjects (such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma), it is likely you have studied the desired breadth of subjects.

Preferred subjects include:

  • Anthropology
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Classics
  • Economics
  • English
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Modern Languages
  • Philosophy
  • Physics
  • Politics
  • Psychology
  • Religious Studies
  • Sociology
  • Statistics

We are aware that the context in which you are studying can have an impact on your ability to perform your best in exams and coursework, or limit which subjects or qualifications you are able to study at your school or college. We take this into careful consideration through our contextual admissions process.

If your Access to HE Diploma qualification is in Humanities or Social Science, we are typically only be able to consider your application if you have strong existing GCSE performance in core science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), or equivalent qualifications.

We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. We may be able to consider alternative units to those listed. Please contact us to discuss your profile.

Taking OU credits may be counted as degree-level study by the Student Loans Company and therefore may be counted as previous study and have an impact on your ability to access student loans/grants for the entirety of your chosen degree. We recommend that you discuss this in detail with the SLC before following this progression route to the University of Bath.

Your application will be considered individually based on the particular combination of qualifications and subjects that you are taking.

  • A*A at A level plus D3 in a Pre-U principal subject

  • A*A at A level excluding Accounting plus A in the LIBF Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies (DipFS). While we can consider this qualification as an equivalent to a third A level, please see the information above for guidance about preferred subjects

We can also consider combinations that are not listed and that do not include A levels. You should read the information about essential and preferred subjects and subject combinations. We cannot consider different qualifications if they are in the same subject area.

Selection process

We will usually assess you based on your UCAS application. If you are studying certain qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma or a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, you may be invited to attend an interview as part of our selection process so we can better assess your studies and experiences. If you are studying an Access to HE Diploma or a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, please make sure that your UCAS application is submitted by 15 January: if you apply after this deadline, then it may be too late for us to include you in our interview process.

Very exceptionally we may invite you to an interview if you have circumstances we cannot assess from an application alone.

Our interview page gives more information on what you should expect from an interview.
