How to print from your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet using the University Print Service (UPS).

Printing from your iPhone or iPad

Using a mobile phone or tablet offers the convenience of sending printing from wherever you are on campus.

It is particularly suited to printing small documents such as emails, Word documents and travel tickets when you are on the move.

Any printing from an iPhone or iPad will be double-sided.

Before printing, make sure you are connected to the eduroam Wi-Fi network.

  1. Open the document you want to print.
  2. Access ‘Print’ by selecting the share button (a square with an up arrow or a curved left arrow, usually found in the top right of the screen) or an icon with three dots.
  3. Select ‘AirPrint’ if requested.
  4. Select 'Printer' and then select either 'UPS1 Mobile' or 'UPS2 Mobile'.
  5. Select how many copies you would like and choose 'colour' or 'black and white'.
  6. Select 'Print'.
  7. Enter your University of Bath username (in the format 'abc123') and password.
  8. Select ‘OK’.

Printing from your Android phone or tablet

Any printing from an Android phone or tablet will be single-sided.

It is particularly suited to printing small documents such as emails, Word documents and travel tickets when you are on the move.

Before printing, make sure you are connected to the eduroam Wi-Fi network.

Setting up print from an Android phone or tablet

To print from an Android phone or tablet for the first time you need to download and configure the SAFEQ Cloud app

  1. Download 'SAFEQ Cloud' from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open 'SAFEQ Cloud' and select 'Settings' from the top menu.
  3. Select the 'Discover' button - this should automatically populate the University print settings. If it doesn’t, manually enter 'ups-print.bath.ac.uk:9444'
  4. Select the 'Test connection' button - if successful, a message will appear to confirm 'Connection test OK'.
  5. Select the 'Save' button to save these settings.
  6. Select 'Account' from the top menu bar.
  7. Enter your University of Bath username (in the format 'abc123') and enter your password, then select 'Login'.
  8. You now need to go in to your phone settings and search for ‘Printing’.
  9. Select ‘Printing’.
  10. Make sure that the 'SAFEQ Cloud' service is set to 'On'. Here, you may also wish to disable other print services that you don't use to avoid seeing additional printers shared from personal devices.

Printing from an Android phone or tablet

  1. From within an app, select the three dots in the top right or three lines in the top left.
  2. Select ‘Print’.
  3. Select the drop-down in the top left and select either 'UPS1 Mobile' or 'UPS2 Mobile'.
  4. Select the down arrow (below 'Copies & Paper size') to expand the properties.
  5. Select the number of copies, select 'colour' or 'black & white' printing and adjust the orientation.
  6. Select the ‘Print’ icon on the right-hand side to send the document to print.

Available functions

The print features may vary depending on the application you are printing from and may vary from the main University Print Service.

When printing from a mobile or tablet, you can't use:

  • stapling
  • double-sided printing on Android
  • single-sided printing on iOS

Mobile and tablet printing is particularly suited to printing small documents such as emails, Word documents and travel tickets when you are on the move.

Printing errors

If you see, 'read failed: EBADF (Bad file descriptor)' on your phone or tablet, this is is an intermittent problem which is currently being investigated. Please print the item from a PC, laptop or Mac.
