Moliehi Mafantiri and Dr Myrna Kay Cunningham Kain are one of 30 pairs of youth climate leaders and climate experts from across the world matched for 1-2-1 conversations as part of this year’s ActNowFilm.

ActNowFilm: youth climate leaders in conversation with climate experts is an international youth voices in climate change project, selected to showcase at COP28. The film is based on 1-2-1 conversations between 30 pairs of youth climate leaders and world leading climate experts.

Moliehi Mafantiri is an environmental scientist focusing on sustainable development, just transitions and climate action. Currently, she is pursuing an MA in Environment and Society at the University of Pretoria. Her research addresses the political economy of the textile value chain in Lesotho, one of Africa’s leading textile exporters. Moliehi’s interests in the green economy and the textile industry inspired her to co-found Barali, a sustainable homeware brand based in Lesotho.

She works as a Policy & Research Officer at Climate Action Network South Africa (SACAN), focusing on policy analysis, research and stakeholder engagement in relation to local, national and global climate policy. She is also one of the global leaders selected to join the Queens Commonwealth Trust Network and a One Young World Ambassador.

As a youth advocate focusing on climate action, she is one of 100 youth in the COP28 International Youth Climate Delegate Program. Additionally, she focuses on climate change as a member of the African Union Youth Reference Committee on Strengthening Youth Participation in Ending Inequalities.

Previously, she represented Lesotho as a YOUNGO delegate at the GEF Southern Africa ECW 2023 and volunteered at the inaugural YOUNGO RCOY Africa in 2022. Owing to her interest in policymaking processes, she is a member of YOUNGO's Loss and Damage working group, serving on the policy committee. Additionally, she is a member of the Global Shapers (World Economic Forum) Tshwane Hub, sharpening her leadership and civic action skills.

Dr Myrna Kay Cunningham Kain, of the Indigenous Miskitu community of Waspam, is a teacher and physician who has worked for over four decades to advance the rights of Indigenous Peoples, knowledge system of Indigenous Peoples in health and education systems, and the impacts of development and climate change, serving as FAO Special Ambassador for the International Year of Family Farming, adviser to the President of the UN World Conference of Indigenous People, and on boards of the Global Fund for Women, Permanent UN Forum on Indigenous Issues, the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID), The Hunger Project, Nia Tero, the Center for Autonomy and Development of Indigenous Peoples (CADPI) and Vice President of the board of the Latin American and Caribbean Indigenous People Development Fund. She is currently Chairperson of Pawanka Fund and the Land Tenure Facility.
