Help us test 'AIME', an app for students' mental wellbeing

We are looking for student volunteers to test a mental wellbeing app. You will need to use the app for 10 minutes every week for four weeks.

About this study

This study aims to explore how effectively positive psychology interventions can be delivered through an app.

Promoting mental wellbeing is considered a fundamental goal in the World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2030. Good mental wellbeing can lead to reduced risk of disease, mental illness and longevity.

Several different positive psychology interventions (PPIs) have been proven effective at improving mental well-being. PPIs are interventions that aim to improve mental wellbeing; some examples include being grateful for positive experiences, developing optimism and setting valued goals.

Delivering PPIs through mobile and tablet-based apps offers a great opportunity for enhancing mental wellbeing in students, due to the reduced support-seeking barriers and stigma, the opportunities for high reach, and its cost-effectiveness.

Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of delivering PPIs through an app called 'AIME' (created by the study researchers for the purpose of the research) for students' mental wellbeing.

This study will run until 3 March 2024.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this study, you must:

  • be a student
  • be at least 16 years old
  • have access to an iOS (Apple) smartphone or tablet
  • not currently receive mental health care
  • not currently experience anxiety or depression

What you'll do

You will be asked to fill out a five-minute screening questionnaire. If you are eligible for the study, you will then fill out a survey (this will take about 35 minutes).

The end of the survey will provide you with instructions on how to download/access the trial app on your iOS smartphone/tablet. You will then be asked to use the ‘AIME’ app for 10 minutes weekly for four weeks.

After four weeks, you will be asked to complete a second survey, which will take about 25 minutes. In total, participation takes about two hours across the four weeks.

What you will get for participating

If you are a University of Bath student studying a psychology degree, you will be allocated 4.1 credits.

All other participants will receive a £20 Amazon gift voucher.
