Find out more about the Discover Bath programme, including information about accommodation, eating on campus, and the other facilities you can use.

Factsheet

Discover Bath is free of charge

Accommodation, travel, food and all activities are provided free of charge.

Accommodation

Where you'll be staying

You will stay in our on-campus student accommodation. This is a great way to meet new people and make friends during the residential. You’ll get your own lockable bedroom (you won’t be required to share a bedroom) which will be en-suite (so you’ll get your own bathroom). Bed linen, pillows, duvets and towels will all be provided in your accommodation.

You should pack:

  • clothes
  • toiletries
  • a hairdryer (if you need one)
  • medication which you take
  • a book, magazine, or game for when you have free time
  • a notebook and pen would also be useful

We will send you a detailed kit list closer to the date.

There will be separate male and female accommodation areas. If you have any concerns about this, please let us know.

Staying overnight during the residential.

The residential element of Discover Bath is compulsory. When you go to university, you must learn how to balance your own budget, manage your time effectively and juggle conflicting demands. Living away from home is a great opportunity to meet new people from different backgrounds. Please contact us if you are worried about the residential aspect of the course.

What you'll eat during your stay

Free breakfast and dinner will be provided in our on-campus canteen and a free packed lunch will be provided each day.

Accommodating dietary requirements

We cater for a wide range of dietary needs and allergies – please contact us to discuss this.

Travelling to our campus

You can choose to travel by train, coach or for a parent/carer to drop you off by car.

  • If you choose to travel by train, then we will send you rail tickets in advance
  • If you choose to travel by coach, then we will send you coach tickets in advance
  • If you choose to travel by car, then we will cover some of your fuel costs to and from the University. This is worked out using a mileage rate and will be reimbursed after the summer school

Responsibility for your safety and wellbeing during Discover Bath

You will be looked after by members of the University Events staff and our student ambassadors who have experience in running these programmes. All of the Events staff and ambassadors have Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.

Accommodating additional needs

If you are offered and accept a place on Discover Bath, we will send you additional forms asking how we can support you if you have a medical condition or Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). We encourage you to provide as much detail as possible. That way, we can make any necessary adjustments and provide relevant support to ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Before you arrive, one of our team will be in contact to discuss your needs and make sure we have everything in place for your stay. If you’d like to familiarise yourself with the University environment, we can arrange for you and your parent(s) or guardian(s) to visit us prior to Discover Bath. This can be discussed during our pre-arrival chat.

Designated quiet rooms

We do have some designated quiet zones which can be used during the daytime. These will be detailed on the timetable we send you. If you choose to go there, please let a member of staff know.

Prayer rooms

If you require a prayer room during your stay, then please let us know before you arrive and we can arrange this for you. We provide opportunities for students to perform religious duty throughout the day, but we ask you to let us know how strict the timings are as this will determine where you'll be able to perform the prayer.

We advise you to bring your own prayer mat if it is reasonably portable as we cannot guarantee that we will have enough available on the day.

Free time

You will have a couple of hours a day to socialise and explore the campus. We run free-time activities in the late afternoon and evening which are great to attend, and there will also be time to relax in your room or to chill out in an outdoor space.

Leaving campus

We ask that for the duration of the programme, you remain on campus. This is for the safety of all our guests. Please contact us before the event if you think this might be a problem. You will need to sign a Code of Conduct to say that you agree not to leave campus.

Mobile phones

Of course, you can bring your mobile to Discover Bath. You'll be able to connect to Wi-Fi when you are on campus. We do, however, ask you not to use your mobile phone during academic sessions (unless instructed to do so by the teacher).

Getting to know other students

If you don't know anyone else who's coming to Discover Bath, that's okay. Many of the students on the programme will not know anyone else when they first arrive. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends. We run social events to help you to get to know others on the programme. If you feel homesick or lonely, then please let one of our student ambassadors know, and they will support you.

Spending money

There won’t be time for any shopping excursions in the city. However, you may wish to bring some money to buy drinks or University merchandise.
