Green Computer Science building opening soon
New Computer Science building: structure completed and internal fitting underway.
The University has invested £16.6 million pounds in the new East Building which is nearing completion. Built using "Zero Harm" standards it will have low energy consumption, a bank of photovoltaic cells on the roof, an energy recycling system and insulation well-beyond national requirements. Native woodland planting, bird and bat boxes will enhance the ecology of the site, extending the biodiversity habitat of the University Campus and surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The building is wonderfully light, with a floating staircase in a central well, naturally lit from above. The Department of Computer Science will be the major occupier, with two-thirds of the floor area. The building is on schedule to be handed over in February and the move will be complete by May.
From October 2011 all our students will have a greatly extended range of facilities located in an adventurous building. There are three completely new teaching labs for the exclusive use of our Department's students. The building also incorporates a general computer lab and thin-client computers operated by the central computer services, a 350-seat lecture theatre and smaller teaching rooms.
The East Building will house all the Computer Science academic and support staff and their research students, as well as providing research laboratory space to support them.
With the new Graduate Centre and a Student Centre opening by October 2010, a major new campus catering outlet already open and with international-standard sports facilities next door, Bath's Computer Science students will have facilities second to none!
