Computer Science moves to £16 million building
At the beginning of May, we moved to the new £16 million East Building.
Over £100,000 of computing equipment, including £25,000 of specialist equipment and a 6 terabyte server, is being installed to support Computer Science's three new teaching labs. In addition there are seminar and meeting rooms with smart whiteboards, lecture rooms with the latest audio-visual facilities, several comfortable social areas and brand new specialised research labs, one equipped with green-screen and cameras, another with digital audio facilities and a third for experimental work on interaction.
The building is in a prime location on campus, just a few seconds' walk from the East car park, bus stops, Sports Training Village and first year accommodation, and contains a 350-seat lecture theatre, available for both internal and external bookings. Our neighbours in the building are the departments for Development & Alumni Relations, and Corporate Communications.
This state-of-the-art building has been constructed to the highest environmental standards and designed to give clear views to the surrounding campus and landscape. It has been awarded a rating of "Excellent" from the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).
This exceptional rating has been achieved by using best practice in sustainable contruction and operation, including:
- Solar panels (which will offset 10% of the buildings carbon footprint alone)
- 'Termodeck' heating and cooling system
- Low 'U-value' materials (for reduced heat transfer)
- Carbon dioxide sensors to detect how many people are using a room
- Low energy consumption fittings
- Automatic lighting
- Water saving bathroom facilities
Additionally, there will be a zero bin policy in the building (plus recycling facilities), cycle racks and shower facilities, and native planting and bird/bat boxes to further the building's strong 'green' philosophy.
