While the last ten years has seen the 'projectification' of many organisations and their supply chains, the majority of projects are at best only partially successful.

In this masterclass, we explore the critical role of good project management in delivering projects in line with key stakeholder expectations.

We will consider real examples of project success and failure, and in doing so look to make sense of the key factors project managers must consider to meet performance objectives. We will examine the importance of project differentiation, stakeholder management, project definition, and learning effects.

In his interactive Masterclass, Professor Lewis explores (deploying an eclectic range of source material including, as it is Bath, Jane Austen) the critical process of bringing together these invaluable but problematic silos.

Professor Michael Lewis is Professor of Operations and Supply Management. He leads the Managing Operational Processes module on the MBA. Mike has teaching, research and consultancy experience with a broad range of public and private sector organisations in the UK and globally. Current projects include professional service transformation and operations leadership.

‘Exploring the value of failure’

Organisations understandably treat failure as a bad thing. Yet, it is arguably the response to failure that is most critical to long-term success (or failure!). In this Masterclass, Professor Alistair Brandon-Jones will explore what failure means to customers, employees, and organisations. The session will examine ways in which organisations can improve their responses to failure through effective complaint handling, proactive failure identification, and prevention-through-learning.

Professor Alistair Brandon-Jones, Chair in Operations and Supply Management and Associate Dean for Post Experience Education, is a leading Service Operations researcher, with much of his work exploring the interaction between individuals and processes. Alongside Professor Nigel Slack, he is co-author for the world’s leading portfolio of Operations Management textbooks and has won several national and international awards for contributions to teaching.



‘Redesigning Manufacturing: Returning Balance to the UK Economy’

Presented by Professor Mike Beverland

Barely a week goes by without a media pundit, industry spokesperson or politician decrying the decline of manufacturing in the UK while at the same time virtually all UK manufacturing sectors are enjoying increased confidence, sales, and export growth. Interest in “making” continues to grow, be it craft, design, 3D printing, or consumer preference for locally made. The ‘real story’ is missing primarily due to outdated view of how manufacturing businesses operate.   

In this Master Class Professor Beverland identifies the real story behind the rebound in UK manufacturing. He proposes that manufacturing needs to be viewed as a form of connected creativity whereby brand value is built through innovative product and systems design, connections to place, the joy of making, and supportive services. This session, which previewed a forthcoming book, unpacks the nature of modern UK manufacturing success and calls for a new conversation around policy, education and practice.


‘The impact of your clients on your firms ability to innovate’

The importance of innovation for the success of firms that operate in a knowledge economy is well recognized. However, we know less about the influence of external stakeholders, such as clients, on the ability of the firm to innovate. These client relationships themselves can act as a relational resource, i.e. social capital, which enables, or constrains, innovation. In this master class Professor Swart draws on empirical data from research conducted in professional services firms (PSFs) which are reliant upon innovation in order to generate a competitive advantage. In particular, the session focusses on how both human and social capital enable the firm to innovative and illustrates how specific combinations of human and social capital generate innovation.

Dr Bruce RaytonEmployee engagement has captured the attention of many strategic human resource management thinkers and practitioners. While strong disagreements exist amongst academics about precisely what is (and what is not) meant by the term “engagement”, the combined weight of evidence for links between performance and the things that practitioners typically mean when they say “engagement” is actually very strong. 

Dr Bruce Rayton will discuss some of the evidence contained in his report Engage for Success as well as present some of the longitudinal evidence on the links between employee engagement and performance that are emerging from his research with colleagues at Bath where he is an Associate Professor and Director of the Bath MBA.

Professor Hope Hailey is an internationally renowned leading light in the field of Strategic Human Resources Management. Recently acclaimed as one of the most influential women in HR, Veronica specialises in working with large, mature corporations in collaborative research partnerships. She is particularly interested in exploring the challenges of corporate renewal and transformation. Her research focuses on Trust and the link between business strategy, HR strategy and change management. Veronica has recently been appointed to the position of Dean of the University of Bath School of Management from 2013.
