Strengthening Employee Commitment for Improved Business Performance

University of Bath research that links Human Resource (HR) policies, employee commitment and business performance has generated a commitment-focused business model to underpin changes in recruitment strategies, line management and reward systems. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) uses this research in the training and certification of HR professionals.

The research findings have directly informed the work of the 'Engage for Success' taskforce, launched by the Prime Minister in 2011. The Nationwide Building Society provides an example of how the research has encouraged employee commitment through improvements in the effectiveness of workplace practices. The research has informed changes in the company's approach to the management of HR. Results in Nationwide Building Society have shown a 4.6% improvement in employee commitment and a 3.9% increase in level of sales vis-à-vis targets.
