Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies Applicant Visit Days (AVDs)

Our AVDs allow you to experience what it'll be like to study your chosen politics or modern languages course at Bath. You must have a degree offer to attend.

After you receive an offer to study one of our undergraduate courses in politics or modern languages, we'll email you to invite you to an Applicant Visit Day (AVD).

Our politics and modern languages courses include:

  • BA (Hons) International Politics and Modern Languages
  • BA (Hons) Modern Languages
  • BSc (Hons) Politics with Economics
  • BSc (Hons) Politics and International Relations

We usually run AVDs between February and May. You'll be able to choose from a selection of available dates, but it's best to book early to make sure you get a place as they can fill up quickly.

As part of your invitation, you'll receive information about travel, campus accessibility, and where to go when you get here.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to visit our student accommodation facilities during AVDs. However, you can find out more about our accommodation options on our Student Accommodation web pages.

What is an Applicant Visit Day and why should I attend?

AVDs are for people with an offer to study with us. You don’t have to accept your offer to attend an AVD.

AVDs are the next step after an Open Day. Whereas Open Days give you an overall experience of the University, an AVD is your chance to gain a greater insight into the course you want to study and what it’ll be like to be part of our Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies (PoLIS) (which runs our politics and modern languages courses).

In-person and online AVDs

AVDs can be in-person or online. This means that you can benefit from the AVD experience whether you visit our campus or not.

During online AVDs, you'll be able to listen to talks, and speak to staff and current students.

In-person AVDs will also include a campus tour. This gives you the chance to explore our facilities and experience what it's like to be a Bath student.

What you’ll do at an AVD

AVDs include an introductory talk from one of our academics. They'll tell you more about how our courses are structured and assessed, and the topics you'll study.

They'll also provide bespoke information about the options available on your chosen course for:

You'll also be able to talk to staff from our Department and student ambassadors, who will be happy to answer any questions you have about studying at Bath.

Student life at Bath

Throughout the AVD, you can speak to students studying our politics and modern languages courses. They’ll be able to answer your questions about university and campus life, and talk about their own experiences.

As well as finding out more about the Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies and your course, during in-person AVDs you’ll have the chance to explore our campus and visit:

  • our Sports Training Village (STV) - home to facilities used by Olympic athletes and top sports teams
  • The Students’ Union
  • The Edge - where you can take dance, art and music classes
  • The Plug and The Tub - our on-campus bar and nightclub
  • various food outlets and cafés

Explore the city

AVDs usually last around half a day. This means that you’ll have time to travel into Bath and experience the city. Bath is a student-friendly place with lots of picturesque outside spaces and shops, restaurants and bars.

If you're unable to attend an AVD

We want to help you experience our University, even if you're unable to attend an AVD.

We offer a range of dates so you can choose to attend one that best suits you.

However, if you are unable to make one of our AVDs and would like to visit us, we offer a range of group and self-led campus tour options.
