As an individual and as part of your team or department, there are lots of meaningful ways you can get involved in improving sustainability, reducing our impact on the environment, and tackling climate change.


Work sustainably


As a member of staff at Bath, you’re part of a community of over 3,900 colleagues. Making sure we reduce our environmental impact during the time we spend at work has a positive effect on our overall sustainability.

Attend a course

Attend one of our courses to learn about sustainability at Bath and how you can play your part.


Introduction to Sustainability

All staff can attend this introductory workshop to learn about the latest climate and sustainability work at the University, and how you can be involved.

Carbon Literacy

Our Carbon Literacy courses are open to all staff and students at the University. The course will teach you how we can individually and collectively take action to tackle climate change. 

Introduction to Lab Sustainability & LEAF

All staff and postgraduate lab users can attend this introductory workshop to learn about sustainable lab practices, and how you can take action through LEAF, the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework.

Get involved with Green Impact


Green Impact is our change programme that will support you and your colleagues to improve sustainability and social responsibility in your work area. 

You can make meaningful, visible progress in your department, faculty, institute or work area. You’ll learn transferable skills and meet new people too.

There are lots of easy ways you can change your habits to be more sustainable.


Be a sustainable traveller

Staff business travel and commuting each account for around 5% of our total annual carbon footprint. Learn more about travelling sustainably:

Buy less, buy better

If you’re responsible for purchasing products and services for your department, read our Buy less, buy better campaign to reduce waste and get more value out of your purchases.

Don’t be wasteful

In support of our mission to Leave No Trace, you can:

  • take a reusable container when you buy food on campus
  • buy or bring your own cup and get a discount on hot drinks
  • rescue unsold food from going to waste
  • recycle in lots of different places on campus

Teach your students about sustainability


Our academic staff have the unique privilege of being able to influence the next generation of students to be inquisitive, motivated and ambitious about a sustainable future.

Conduct research for sustainability

Sustainable research and innovation practices not only reduce negative impacts but also improve efficiency and build positive community relationships.

When designing your research, make sure it aims to address relevant sustainability challenges, like climate change, waste reduction, social equity, and biodiversity preservation.

Make your lab sustainable

As a lab user, you may be aware of the many impacts your work has on energy and water consumption, supply chains, travel, teaching, and culture.

The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) has been designed as a tool to support lab users to adopt more sustainable practices.

Meet our Climate Advocates

Our network of Climate Advocates act as satellite members of the Sustainability team to implement our whole-institution approach.

As a Climate Advocate, you can work across our four work themes of education, research, footprint and partnerships. The role includes developing action plans, reporting progress and leading engagement and communications in your department.
