Why I chose Bath

Before coming to Bath, I spent nearly ten years in Taiwan working in shipping technology and project management. Through my involvement in offshore wind farm developments, I became increasingly interested in the potential of the maritime energy transition.

I chose the University of Bath to combine my engineering and management background with broader knowledge of new energy and the circular economy.

Bath also played a role in my decision. I was drawn to the city when researching where to study, and the University’s practical courses and strong links with local industry gave me a clear sense of direction.

The MSc Decarbonisation course also stood out to me because of its comprehensive structure. It combines core engineering computation with management modules. Over the summer, students can choose between a consultancy project with a local company and an individual dissertation.

My experience on the course

The professors are professional and approachable, and their passion for their subjects makes the lectures enjoyable.

It is difficult to choose one part of the programme that has been the most rewarding. Each module has its own focus, and the course is flexible and engaging. The teaching has encouraged me to think about problems in different ways and has made the whole programme rewarding.

Putting theory into practice

The consultancy project gave me a valuable opportunity to put theory into practice. The project was outside my usual area of expertise, so working in a new sector broadened my perspective on how circular economy strategies can be used across different industries.

The experience also gave me a deeper understanding of cross-cultural collaboration and project management.

Using structured project management tools alongside science-based decision making showed me how I could apply what I had learned beyond one industry.

What’s next for me?

After graduating, I will return to my previous company. My aim is to explore practical circular solutions for the maritime sector and act as a bridge between technical engineering, sustainability policies and day-to-day operations.

My time at Bath has helped me connect my previous experience in engineering and management with my growing interest in new energy and the circular economy.

Beyond the academic knowledge, the critical thinking approach I have developed at Bath is something I will continue to draw on in the future.
