The Centre for Photonics brings together expertise in the science and application of light at the University of Bath, spanning areas such as speciality optical fibres, nanoscale and quantum photonics, and emerging fields including nanobiophotonics. A particular strength lies in its internationally recognised leadership in optical fibre science and technology, where researchers design and fabricate novel fibres with unique structures and properties, enabling advances in telecommunications, sensing, and quantum technologies. Alongside this, the Centre supports interdisciplinary research using light to study and engineer bio-inspired systems at the nanoscale, driving innovation from fundamental discovery through to real-world applications in communications, healthcare, and beyond.
The Centre provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced optical laboratories and fibre fabrication capabilities, and acts as a hub for collaboration across departments and with external partners.
At the launch event, the Centre Co-Directors, Professor William Wadsworth and Dr Kristina Rusimova, will outline the vision for the Centre, its strategic priorities, and future plans. The event will also showcase the new Photonics Laboratory Suite, feature a plenary talk, and include opportunities to engage with academic, student, and industry-led activities.
