The role is associated with the Royal Society International Collaboration Award “Operator learning for gradient flows with applications in imaging” led by Dr Yury Korolev (University of Bath) and Dr Takashi Furuya (Doshisha University, Kyoto). Close collaboration with Doshisha University is envisaged and the successful candidate is expected to take part in regular research visits to Japan. The project concerns theoretical analysis and numerical implementation of operator learning methods for gradient-flow-type equations driven by maximally monotone operators.

This role is part of the UK Catalysis Hub where the practical work will take place at the Research Complex at Harwell (RCaH), working within the Hub laboratories.

The UK Catalysis Hub is a national consortium of 46 universities, 15 companies, the STFC Harwell science facilities, and 13 international partners established in 2013 to coordinate and advance UK catalysis research and connect it internationally. Now in its third phase of funding, its priority research areas include sustainability and net zero, digital chemistry, and advanced characterisation methods. One of its core missions is to support the training and career development of early career researchers via community events.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated postdoctoral researcher to work at the interface of heterogeneous catalysis and in situ spectroscopy, to understand molecular behaviour in zeolite catalysts for sustainable aviation fuels.

This one-year project brings together complementary expertise in catalytic testing and in situ spectroscopy (Lezcano Gonzalez, UK Catalysis Hub/Manchester) with atomistic modelling and simulation of microporous catalysts carried out by the main supervisor (O’Malley, Bath). The work will focus on the alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) process, a key route to sustainable aviation fuels, and aims to establish how adsorption, diffusion, and competitive site interactions within zeolite micropores govern catalytic performance, selectivity, and stability.

The project will involve catalytic testing in fixed-bed reactors and in situ FTIR/DRIFTS spectroscopy to probe adsorption, acid-site interactions, and reaction intermediates. The successful candidate will be based at Harwell, gaining experience across multiple techniques.

This role offers a unique opportunity to develop an integrated experimental skillset working closely with expertise in molecular simulation, with strong links to national facilities (ISIS and Diamond) and future large-scale research programmes. There will also be opportunities to engage with industrial partners working on sustainable aviation fuels and advanced catalyst materials.

Join the HOLLOW SILK project, an ambitious research project funded by the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) through its Universal Fabricators programme. HOLLOW SILK aims to develop a novel manufacturing platform based on engineered silk, for the production of microstructured optical fibres. By combining expertise in biomaterials, fibre manufacturing, chemistry, photonics and engineering, the project will establish innovative routes to advanced materials and structures that are difficult, or even impossible, to achieve using conventional manufacturing technologies.

We are recruiting two Postdoctoral Researchers to join the project for up to 36 months. 

The two positions will play complementary roles within the team. We anticipate appointing at least one Research Associate, and are particularly keen for the other appointment to be made at Research Fellow level, with responsibility for providing technical leadership across the programme. The Technical Lead will help to drive rapid innovation in the programme, coordinate activities between the University of Bath and our international partners and contribute to the strategic direction and delivery of the project, as well as supporting funding bids.

Appointment will be made at Grade 7 (Research Associate) or Grade 8 (Research Fellow), depending on qualifications, experience and track record (see job description below).

The team and environment

Based within the Centre for Photonics at the University of Bath, you will work alongside Professor William Wadsworth, Dr Rox Middleton and Dr Soraya Caixeiro, and collaborate with leading international partners including Professor Fiorenzo Omenetto and Dr Giulia Guidetti (Silklab, Tufts University) and Dr David Breslauer (USA). The project will be based within the Centre for Photonics at the University of Bath, providing a highly collaborative environment. 

The successful candidates will join a highly interdisciplinary and international team. Alongside the two University of Bath postdoctoral researchers, the project includes three further postdoctoral researchers based at Tufts University, a research technician at the University of Bath, and programme administrator, providing significant opportunities for collaboration, exchange of expertise and international engagement.

Researchers will also have access to relevant entrepreneurship and professional development opportunities.

In this role you will:

• Develop novel silk-based materials and fabrication processes for advanced fibre technologies.
• Plan and deliver experimental research, including materials characterisation and data analysis.

The experiments will be complemented by computational simulation at the University of Surrey, with the aim to scale data to higher TRL. The successful completion and implementation of this research will improve engine design methods at Rolls-Royce and Siemens for next-generation hydrogen-compatible engines.

The highly successful Bath MPharm is now being delivered on site in new purpose-built facilities at the University of Plymouth campus. Join our highly supportive team in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath, where you will be helping to teach aspirational undergraduate and postgraduate students in Psychology, particularly on the Health Psychology Master’s.

This role will include developing the teaching material, delivery of lectures, seminars and tutorials.

Alongside the supervision, assessment and marking of coursework and research dissertations, you will provide advice and support to students, as well as undertake teaching-related management and administration duties. 

Our ideal candidate would:

• be committed to and have experience of delivering high quality teaching
• show evidence of inclusive teaching practice and student engagement
• have experience supporting students as an Academic Advisor/Personal Tutor or similar
• be confident to teach Qualitative Methods

The University of Bath has developed a substantial hydrogen research and innovation portfolio, underpinned by major programmes including UK-HyRES, GW-SHIFT, ZENITH, alongside hydrogen-related aviation and propulsion projects across the Faculty of Engineering and Design, and supported by dedicated research and innovation infrastructure including hydrogen research lab and IAAPS.

We are seeking an outstanding and collaborative Lecturer in low-carbon Hydrogen Technology with a deliberately broad remit spanning fundamental, applied and translational research and innovation.

Relevant areas may include, but are not limited to:

• Low-carbon hydrogen production, including electrolysis, catalysis and other low-carbon production technologies;
• fuel cells and electrochemical energy conversion;
• hydrogen storage and distribution technologies;
• diagnostics, degradation, durability and operando/in-situ characterisation;
• hydrogen safety, sensing and enabling technologies;
• novel experimental and engineering approaches for hydrogen technologies.

You will be a kind and culturally aware leader who fosters an environment where every individual is valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. You will understand that change is inevitable and necessary, actively encouraging your team to adapt and evolve. The successful candidate will be expected to:

• establish an independent and technically distinctive research programme in hydrogen energy;
• contribute actively to the existing UK-HyRES research portfolio and develop new collaborative activity through the Hub;
• develop new experimental capability and make effective use of Bath’s existing research infrastructure;
• generate high-quality research outputs and build a strong trajectory towards UKRI, Innovate UK, Horizon Europe and industrial funding;
• develop collaborations with existing hydrogen researchers across Bath and the wider UK-HyRES community;
• build industrial partnerships and translate research towards practical hydrogen technologies;
• supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and contribute to relevant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
• develop towards future academic and research leadership.

You will be based in one of the four departments within the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

The role is part of an exciting partnership with the University of Malaga in Spain, University of Manchester in the UK, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), France, within the framework of the consortium, X-SeeO₂ - ‘Real-time X-ray diffraction and microstructure imaging: accelerating the transformation of cementitious materials into CO₂ sinks’. This project is funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under the Pathfinder “Towards Cement and Concrete as Carbon Sinks" Challenge. The Challenge seeks to support breakthrough innovations and (alternative) pathways for producing decarbonised and carbon-negative cement and concrete while maintaining its structural integrity and durability. 

 The 'X-SeeO₂' project has been selected as a key 'enabling technology', and as part of the University of Bath team you will develop mechanochemistry pathways for the development of cementitious materials. You will determine the existing correlations between the properties of minerals of different provenances, and the effect of mechanochemical processing on their chemical reactivity. You will elucidate how to mechanochemically activated materials influence the microstructural features of reaction products formed in blended cements produced with them. This will be achieved by applying laboratory and synchrotron analytical materials characterisation techniques. This complemented by modelling of the processes developed and materials evaluated.

About you

The ideal candidate will:

1. Hold a first degree and doctoral degree in Materials Science, Geology, Environmental Science or closely related disciplines
2. Have a strong background in cementitious materials chemistry and/or mineral processing
3. Experience in the characterisation and modelling of Portland and/or non-Portland cements
4. A demonstrated understanding of the interrelationships between the chemistry of the cements evaluated, their phase assemblage and their pore structure development.
5. Experience on CO₂ mineralisation, CO₂ curing and/or carbonation of cementitious materials
6. Have excellent interpersonal skills and be willing to collaborate with a dynamic, collegial, and multi-disciplinary team of researcher at the University of Bath, and the different partner Universities and the organisations comprising the X-SeeO₂ consortium. 
7. Be able to travel often within the UK and internationally 

The ideal applicant will conduct the research in recently refurbished laboratories in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, as well as central facilities in the Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath. You will also enjoy access to the state-of-the-art characterisation facilities at the Henry Royce Institute at the University of Manchester, and University of Malaga, as well as access to the world-leading X-ray facilities of the European Synchrotron.
